I got an old Cisco 2600 router from work when we were about to dispose of it. I figured my house was a much less ignominious end for the poor thing. I set it up that very night. Ah, bliss, to be running my own Cisco hardware at home, something I haven't done in my nearly 20 years as a network engineer ( Read more... )

At home I've got 4 Cisco 2501 routers, a 1721 router, and a 1900 and 2 assorted 2900 switches. No, they are most certainly not on. I do, however, need to get a rack for them so I can get back to playing with CCNA labs. That's on hold while I learn the Microsoft server stuff I need to do the job I currently have.

For the home network I use a Linksys WRT54G-TM hacked to run DD-WRT Mega. It gives me everything I need for my home network, including acting as an SSL VPN gateway, thanks to being able to run OpenVPN. I also like how it lets me turn the transmitter power down on the wireless. That way I run just enough power to get a strong enough signal anywhere in my apartment, while reducing the area of signal coverage. I'm tempted to make some directional antennas for it, as it is located in a corner of the apartment anyway, and that would radiate even less wasted signal. Other good reason to reduce xmit power is that the cooler circuits last longer.
