today the instructor for kika's cotillion said that you can't dance if you're a lesbian because you're not feminine. it really upset me because that kind of stereotyping is what causes incidents like the assault and death of matthew shepard, among other things.

if she was joking i guess i could understand but still, what a fuckin idiotic thing to say.

it's weird, i was just thinking about the movie crash before i read this. racism and sterotyping comes so easily to us, even my closest friends (and i have to admit i'm a part of this too) joke around using racial slurs sometimes and even though we don't mean anything by it, it's harmful. it's a shame that it's become so typical. i guess we live with ourselves by just forgetting just how horrible the things that come out of our mouths really are. instead of forgive and forget, it's forget and forgive. we just put it in the back of our minds, and it's not such a big deal.

there are a lot of inferences we can make about people through our experience, so jokes talking about certain people of a certain race doing things that are, as far as we know, characteristic of their group... we are more or less legit in making them. as long as we don't harbor truly hard thoughts in our heads, no harm no foul right? haha we're alright.
