Sorry for not posting in, you know, months. Part of it is that Facebook is damned fun and convenient, part of it is being crazy busy, and part of it is that a lot of my brain space is taken up with wedding-related matters, and while I enjoy it, I don't want to foist it off on those of you who might actually read this. I may have exciting news soon ( Read more... )

techie stuff, dreams, sociology, neighborhood

What I don't like about Facebook is that it's so canned and not very flexible.

I like the idea of that variation on Google Maps that would be so, so informative. I have the same kind of wonder about various places I've lived, particularly ones where I spent some of the more formative phases of my life, and for which I feel an almost lover-like affection.

I agree that Facebook isn't very expansive, and it makes you conform to one of several pre-set formats, but truth be told I kind of enjoy it... much like writing a particular, structured, type of poem (say a pantoum), I find the constraints inspire me to think a little more creatively. Of course, there are a lot of people out there (some of them my friends on FB) who end up writing things full of LOL!!!, but there seems to be no escaping that anywhere on the Interwebz these days anyhow.

There are times when having lived my whole life in Pittsburgh makes it feel dull and unexciting, but those phases never last long for me. I will probably live somewhere else for a while, just to have the life experience, but I can't imagine being really happy anywhere else. I feel a sense of pride and connection with this place and its history that isn't unlike how I feel about my parents... and what's more, for the most part I like the changes that have occurred here.

I think what any online writing is for a person, depends on their audience. For me, much of my audience on Facebook is related to me, so I censor myself quite a bit there, fearing scolds from my big sister. I probably wouldn't have begun posting there very much if I my sister hadn't found me on there, and added me. I've since started having some good exchanges with a few very old friends that are not, and would not thrive on Live Journal. This is still very much my place for expressing myself online with any appreciable level of creativity. It also bugs me that you can't edit posts on Facebook, but only delete them.

Brightkite follows friends via Twitter and SMS, but it gets annoying to be notified all the time. Google Latitude is a data pull service; if you want to know where your friends are, it can tell you (as long as they're a member).

Having one of those basically put hypertext on the real world with GPS cues, yeah, that would be Full of Win.
