I was carrying a bag of clubs to the juggling club last Wednesday, when one of the clubs got stuck in the wheel. I wasn't going fast and I didn't fall so much as simply stop, but it yanked the wheel badly out of true (the wheel actually rubs against the frame once a revolution, but it's technically ridable). Thank goodness I had another bike to use (thanks
canarasekal (Dad)!) So today I finally had a little time to take it to Paul's to get the wheel trued as well as a whole host of other general maintenance that needed to be done, I kept hearing a clicking sound whenever I went over a bump. I didn't think anything was loose, but I gave my bike the once over and didn't find anything. Approximately 200 yards later, I look down in mid stroke and realize that the clicking is the vertical portion of my frame, which has ripped apart at the main axle joint, and is moving into and out of its old position.
Let me say that again, in case you missed it: my frame broke. Not an axle, not the headset, and not a wheel. The frame has a irreparable shear in the metal just above the axle my pedals rotate around.
Anybody have any advice as to what I should replace it with? I need a touring/road bike, and I don't have a whole lot of money, but since I don't have a car I'm willing to spend a little extra to get a nice bike if that's what it takes to be happy.
