Hmmm...would you be willing to loan me the Greer books sometime? I'll reimburse you for the shipping.

I don't have any of his books. The links I've listed are to essays on his blog. He writes about one a week and they go back a few years. I'd start there to see if his style to your liking.

I tried looking for his book at Barnes & Noble but they weren't in stock in the city or in any of the nearby ones. I likely would have to check if The Long Descent: A User's Guide to the End of the Industrial Age were available on-line like on Amazon.

Amazon does have a fairly extensive list of his secular and more religous works, here.

Yes, I remember seeing that.

I've also gotten interested in getting a hold of The Long Emergency by James Howard Kunstler. Want to see what that's about.

Honestly it feels like Y2K all over again. Except I don't think it'll be that sudden and I think it will be years in the making. Hopefully enough time to prepare.

Thank you, Paul! Daniel and I are both greenies (Daniel especially is very eco-conscious) and I'd be interested to read something thick and intellectually stimulating. A lot of the hyper-emotional stuff out there just confuses me. I'm one of those people who doesn't know who to believe about global warming, but Daniel and I drive less (he rides his bike most days and I bus it to work), use less energy and do pretty much everything we can, because no matter what people think, the earth, and each person living on it, is worth it.

I just didn't really know where to start, because, as you know, I'm a conservative on some issues, and most of the people I know don't have a clue as to who to read about the environment. I'm gonna take your suggestion. Thanks again!

I hope you liked some of Greer's writings.

I'm fairly fiscally conservative - to an extent, more like with the safeguards that came into place after the Great Depression that Volcker and Buffet advocate. But I do think some of the really stupid crap that's been happening has got to have legal and personal repercussions or there's no trust in the market or in corporations. We can't keep slapping the hands of executives and letting them go. Why is it Madoff went to jail, but Lehman Brothers executives who "sold" billions in toxic mortgages at the end of each quarter for cash - only to buy it back a week later after quarterly reporting was done - apparently didn't do anything illegal.

That said, I personally believe the battle for the environment and for species diversity and greatness as we currently know it is over - just doing a slow decline made up of countless species deaths. But nature will ultimately prevail - just in a different form, probably with a lot less less diversity and a much smaller human footprint if any.
