I suspect I got as far as trying to distinguish between Faith-as-plot-device from Faith-as-real-life-component-of-the-human-condition, then threw up my hands in resignation.

Totally unrelated: don't read about "28 Days Later" (and "Se7en," but that's tangential) before sleeping: you wind up listening to Godspeed! and thinking about that evening last summer, all of us gathered together on your bed.
This might be mean of me, but I suspect that you have an easier time stomaching the hints of faith in Signs (I haven't seen Frailty) because they are more oblique and less Christian than those in Own Meany
