I passed through the town centre at around a quarter to ten and people were beginning to assemble for the ceremony at the War Memorial. I say "people" as if they were Joe and Jill Public but they were mostly a particular kind of person- young people in uniform- cadets, scouts- and the older people who train them. Same here, but a lot of the local ceremonies take place on the nearest Sunday because that's when people are free....

Cos we are too stingy to have it as a national holiday. I used to attend but these past few years I am getting on. Only time my Grandad's medals get aired.

My father was in the Royal Navy, but land based, dealing with unexploded bombs. My mother was a military driver- like the late Queen.....
