I passed through the town centre at around a quarter to ten and people were beginning to assemble for the ceremony at the War Memorial. I say "people" as if they were Joe and Jill Public but they were mostly a particular kind of person- young people in uniform- cadets, scouts- and the older people who train them. Somewhere a bagpiper was practising

Same here, but a lot of the local ceremonies take place on the nearest Sunday because that's when people are free....

Cos we are too stingy to have it as a national holiday. I used to attend but these past few years I am getting on. Only time my Grandad's medals get aired.

We have medals knocking around, but nothing special.....

My father was in the Royal Navy, but land based, dealing with unexploded bombs. My mother was a military driver- like the late Queen.....

My father, who was raised in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, had never even seen a really large lake before he was inducted into our own Navy
