Fish And Chips

I still think of fish and chips as a cheap, working-class meal but it isn't any longer and hasn't been for ages. We went to what is probably the best fish and chip restaurant in town (at least that's what the proprietor/waitress says it is- and I'm not arguing) and the bill came out at about twice what I'd thought we'd be paying. Still, great meal ( Read more... )

American Benjamin Franklin was a strict vegetarian, with one noteworthy exception in his diet: he ate, very specifically, cod because he had observed that very small cod were eaten by larger cod which were eaten by Very Big Cod and Franklin deemed it suitable that such a reasonable fish should feed a reasonable man.

Fish and chips is one of HCD's go-to meals when we go out.

We used to have a chain of fast-food fish-and-chips places (Arthur Treacher's) but I am guessing it became uneconomical.

Are people in your area typically pretty reserved? She sounds like she might be what we call "a lot" ... big personality and maybe people find her overwhelming, or she's just perceiving that because they put less out there than she's used to.

It's a common perception that people in the North of England are more outgoing than people in the South- and I think it's probably true.....

I'm glad they figured out how to raise catfish in farm ponds back in the 1960's. It's the fish that feeds the Deep South its "cheap fish" these days (not that any fish is cheap any more). Catfish being willing to eat food pellets off the pond "floor" unlike all the other species of fish Southerners were used to eating back in the day.
They've learned how to raise shrimp too and they're still working on perfecting their salmon raising techniques.

I wonder what sort of fish they used to make your "fish and chips"?

There's a choice. The favourite is cod- which is harvested from the seas around Britain.

We live on the coast and a lot of the towns round here- including our own- have fishing fleets.
