Supposedly, accidents are no more common in Italy because drivers (have to) pay far more attention.

The Table Saw Axiom presumably applies here: that crashes aren't significantly more common, but they're probably more severe.

The name comes from the table saw in a wood shop -- since the accidents are pretty awful, people have less of them because they worry about that... So you tend to assume that however much mangling people the table saw does, it would be even worse if it weren't pretty theatrically bad when it happened.

This applies to motorcycle crashes (in the US, like) as well.

I know intellectually there must be worse, but I just don't feel any need to experience it firsthand...

If you haven't seen the animation short Europe vs Italy you will get a kick out of it. It totally shows just what you are talking about. I believe the animator is Italian so they know how bad they are.

I didn't like visiting Italy because I felt I had to be defensive all the time and still wasn't able to protect myself from being taken advantage of. It took all the joy out of the good parts. I am sorry to hear that you had similar problems.

Very amusing and definitely true in parts. Seems a mite exaggerated in other parts, though.

We didn't let the need to be somewhat paranoid bother us too much.
