Mark's rules for getting a good dessert in foreign countries

Sep 10, 2011 11:08

Your best option depends on your country:

Belgium: chocolate from a chocolatier
France: chocolate mousse
Germany: anything with baked apples
Italy: gelato
Spain: cake, especially involving chocolate mousse

I haven't found a good rule of thumb for the UK yet.

I'd vote patisserie in France. Walk in and buy whatever looks good/interesting. Yes, it may involve chocolate mousse.

I spent some time in the UK and don't recall what I had for dessert.

I bet that would work too. I'm mostly giving advice for people at restaurants.

Interesting that you don't remember any particularly good desserts in the UK either...

I love banoffeepie (think banana, toffee, cheesecake) and the Brits take their puddings (a type of steamed cake) very seriously. They also believe in the power of "and" when applying cream - ice cream? not a problem! whipped cream? of course! pouring cream on top? absolutely!
