I'm a pompous asshole. I like to have political discussions on my LJ. I also argue with other pompous assholes on their LJ so that everyone on my friends list knows im a pompous asshole. Then people will like me

All I want to say is that I understand andrew's frustration. Just like in philosophy no single political view will ever completley satisfy everyone, so you've got to expect that constantly posting political ideas will eventually alienate someone.
It is also natural for people to assume your goal in posting political views is to try and convince or "polarize" them. After all, there would be no reason to preach this stuff to a bunch of people who already agree with you. As one who doesn't care about politics very much, i can still understand why someone would get sick of constantly being told why so and so is the devil and why so and so is a saint, when both abviously have their pros and cons.
Of course, if it bothers people so much, they should just skip entries like those, and there's no need for bitterness or sarcasm on either side.
i think that in order to maintain intelligence in this debate, it should be required of us to call john kerry's "flip-flops" by their proper name -- thongs.
john kerry's thongs... it has a nice ring. and it connects with the average youthful american, no doubt caught in the passion of "thong fever" led by megapopular music superstar 'sisqo'.
i understand the frustration, but i also understand that there's no need for cruelness and animosity because of it.
i think the principle at work here should be "live and let live." i make my choices, you make yours. there's no need for someone to callously criticize me or anyone else online because a) they're (hypocritically) not strong enough to do it in person and b) they tactlessly and heartlessly miscalculate the hurt it causes the victim when vicious rants like this are casually and ignorantly veiled behind the excuse of "an anonymous target" when everyone who is reading knows (and is friends with) exactly who it is.
my name is emily and i like to alienate myself by straightening my hair. btw andrew just the fact that you posted that thing about political opinions was pompousish and assholish but let's not talk about it.

If it's politics we're here to talk about down the homestretch of the presidential campaign, I'll be glad to throw my hat into the ring once in a while. Although, I'd much rather talk about it in person, this will suffice for now.
