LA Noire

In short, good game. Maybe even great, though I can't really be sure until I've finished it. Hard, though; the game makes a big deal about reading the expressions of the people you interview to tell when they're lying. The instruction manual gives some tips, and recommends you "trust your gut", reminding you that you have years of experience at ( Read more... )

From a technical standpoint.... cybertang May 24 2011, 03:48:59 UTC
To ask a question a little more specific, how are the actual game mechanics? Typical Rockstar? Similar to Red Dead Redemption? How are the driving mechanics with the cars?

I've only watched a little bit of L.A. Noire played, and I like so far, but I am wondering you opinion, since, you know, you like a master at games and all.... (:

The driving is really similar to the GTA games, except obviously now you're driving around a 1940's car instead of a modern car. But anyone who's played any GTA will feel right at home pretty much immediately.

The combat? The fightfights are fun, if a little too easy. The gun battles can be frustrating because of a tricky camera and a cover system that has your character "sticking" to walls, cars, or whatever else. This means that hitting the "cover" button at the wrong time causes your character to stick fast to the nearest object even as enemies just off screen pepper him with bullets.

So the gunbattles are a similar system to "Red Dead Redemption", but just don't feel as easy and responsive. Then again, "Red Dead" had a much higher emphasis on gunplay, whereas "LA Noire" has it more as an optional add-on, so it's a forgivable weakness overall.
