11/10

This past week was finals week in conjunction with moving from the Ethel Street house to a duplex on Mecaslin St. The move was about as easy as such things can be... new place being only 0.1 mile from the old, two weeks of overlap between the old lease ending and the new one beginning. Finals week was fairly trivial, with the only true final I had ( Read more... )

congratulations on the move!

For the most part, I remained packed in boxes for the last year, but I'm resolved to get my boxes unpacked at the new place and have an actual place to put everything so that I actually use the stuff I have, as well as get rid of the stuff I don't.

We lived a couple of years without unpacking everything at the last house. In fact, we had some boxes that we never DID unpack until we were getting ready to move again (five+ years later).

I have the same resolution as you here once I finally move into whatever house we end up buying: unpack everything, put things in their place, and if I don't have a place for it, ditch it. Good luck!

That's the thing I hope to stick to... if there isn't a place for something, ditch it. I mean... there are boxes I moved to my last place that were left unopened when I was moving to this new place. I didn't quite go with my original plan which was to throw away any box I hadn't opened in a year, but hopefully over the course of this week I can trim back a bit more.

Not trying to get into a pissing match, but in a similar fashion I've moved 9 times in the past 7 years. It is fucking exhausting. Every time I move I keep saying to myself- "This is the last time. I'm going to stay here for at least 5 years"- but it never ends up happening. Longest time I've stayed in one place is 1 year 9 months. Kind of sad.

At the same time, it is nice to have a chance to reevaluate your entire material existence once a year. I had trimmed my belongings down to a few truckloads, only to have them balloon again. So it goes.

I hope your new place is awesome. We'll make it out to one of your friday movie things in the near future, I hope. I heard something about your new place not being able to accommodate your huge projector screen? If that's true and you need a smaller one, I've got a 9 foot (I think) screen that's been unused for almost two years since my projector broke. I'd be happy to give it away if it can get some good use.

The problem I've had is that I have tended to horde all of the material things I've accumulated, for whatever reason. This move was the first time I've gotten rid of a lot of stuff, and I'll likely need to get rid of more stuff before all is said and done. It's tiring but worthwhile.

I'm hoping to stay in this place for the rest of my time in school (2 years-ish). Fingers crossed.

Thankfully the screen I was using was Paul's and I didn't buy it off of him since I didn't know how big of a wall I'd have in the new place. I just measured the wall we used last Friday to screen "Heroes Two" and is right around ten feet, so think that your screen would actually be perfectly sized. I appreciate the offer... it will definitely be put to good use.

Right on, Rob. I understand -- I was incredibly happy when I graduated from undergrad and could stop moving twice a year. Even living in one place for a year and a half was a great relief.

Alex has been taking piles of stuff to Goodwill as well. I'm pretty good about minimizing my possessions, and hopefully I can stay that way even thought there's extra space in the new place. (Speaking of which: come visit and stay in our guest room! We actually bought new sheets and curtains for it! Unimaginable luxury!)
