weird food combinations

Nov 11, 2009 16:22

Right now i'm eating curry rice, with a hot dog chopped up in it. :( I'm moving soon and I refuse to go grocery shopping until I eat all the food I have, so nothing goes to waste.

I was just wondering what strange food combinations you guys have eaten when you were low on money and only eating things that were already in your pantry!

Not necessarily a weird thing, but when I'm low on cash, it's always beans and rice for me, since I almost always have those in my pantry. Since I like to buy (but rarely eat) those cute little sauces that always look so good but you wonder wth you are going to do with them when you get home, my beans and rice are often topped with jalapeno jelly, mango chutney, or quince paste (don't ask).

When I run out of beans, it's eggs and rice.

Oh that's a good idea. I always want to try those things but never know what to do with them.

It certainly does break up the monotony when I don't have much food around for one reason or another.

I've eaten this as a regular sandwich, of course, my mom said she ate it all the time when preggers with me.

My pregnant food was the ashes from the coal fire. Yes, you read that right. I must have needed a mineral or something. I would clean out the fireplace in the morning, and lick my fingers as I was on the way to wash my hands...

Pica. Pretty common with pregnant women, and ashes aren't so bad. Now laundry starch, ugh.

I actually like peanut butter spaghetti, but I have some asian pantry staples that make it better - soy sauce, fish sauce, and a little bit of hot sauce of choice - normal peanut butter needs this to balance out the sugar normally put in peanut butter.

Spaghetti with butter and salt
Beans and spaghetti
Matzoh with peanut butter and jelly

Once a room mate of mine added sardines to a pasta dish. I declined...

I eat spaghetti with butter and salt even when my fridge and pantry are stocked.

Hot dogs, chopped up in stovetop stuffing with refried beans and cheese whiz. It felt like I ate a concrete block afterwards. @.o

+1 point for intestinal fortitude. I don't think I could have even looked at that once cooked.

It looked very innocuous. It even tasted pretty good. But it was DENSE. Like, TMI-worthy dense. Yeah.

But it did feed me when I was down to my last 86 cents and trying to eat from the fridge/pantry.

In fact, after that I don't think I needed food for another 3 days. :p

I'm so glad my husband hasn't seen this recipe. He's made ramen with spam and american cheese melted in before X-(
