Martin and I have decided we need a second computer (or rather... he's finally agreed with something I knew two years ago!), so we're looking for a laptop as we don't have space for a whole 2nd pc ( Read more... )

Work - just word processing, internet access, emails
OS - want to run xp if possible (we don't like vista!), Martin says 1gb ram and if it has vista we'd need 2gb (*watches what she's typing go over her head*)

I only have a couple of suggestions, after having one for work these past four years.

Buy one and get it covered under the house insurance or something. That way, you have a year's guarantee with it, possibly more. It also means that if you drop it, you're covered. Laptops contain a lot of custom parts that are much more difficult to diagnose and replace than a desktop. Do not, under any circumstances, buy an extended warranty from the store, as you can end up paying much much more than you need.

Depending on how much work you do on your laptop, set up a regular backup cycle to copy all your important work either to another computer or to a CD or similar. Don't rely on USB memory sticks as a backup solution, as they're not reliable enough.

If you have a car, make sure your insurance covers the laptop being nicked from it.

That said, for what you need, you could probably pick something up online or from tesco for about £300
