Brooke looked at her watched and let out a silent curse when she entered the library. She was late and she hated being late. Her days just seemed to get worse and worse. She'd rather be anywhere but in the library. Only she didn't have a choice. So taking a deep breath, she decided to make the best of the situation.
The library was virtually empty, save for a few upperclassmen that Brooke knew passing via Marley Jacobs. She scanned the room looking for an unfamiliar face. At least she hoped it was unfamiliar because she was pretty sure that she didn't know an...Isabelle Jameson.
Her eyes found a girl with short reddish brown hair and glasses. Her head was bent and she was scribbling on a pad. Brooke assumed that this was Isabelle. She walked up to the table and cleared her throat. When the girl looked up, Brooke flashed her best "Brooke McQueen smile."
Izzy looks up at the throat clearing, also jumping slightly in her seat. She does her best not to be visibly dazzled by the smile, but also looks thoroughly confused. This was not the girl from the hallway. And what was with the full name thing?
"You're Brooke McQueen?" Her tone isn't rude, just... highly surprised. And confused.
She recovers after a moment, blushing at actually having said that out loud. She quickly shakes the offered hand. "I... uh... sorry. I mean. It's nice to meet you. And please, it's Izzy." She is clearly embarassed, as well as still nervous.
Brooke returned the smile. Usually by now, Josh's eyes would have glazed over and Nicole wouldn't have even been listening to what she was saying. It was nice to have someone really listen to her for a change. "Yeah, it's really interesting. I've just always wondered why people never questioned that he landed in Central America and there is a country named after him in South America, but the U.S. is the only country that celebrates Columbus Day."
Brooke spoke excitedly. She'd never really discussed her opinion on such matters with anyone, not even in class. It wasn't a part of the 'popularity' package. She was expected to get good grades but not to ever appear too brainy. It was sometimes difficult to balance.
"Anyway, we're not going to be tested on all of that. Again sorry for the tangent." She smiled sheepishly and turned back to her notes. "Today we talked about the diseases the Europeans brought with them when the arrived. And we have to answer the questions at the end of chapter."
She continues to listen with interest. "Y'know, that really is odd. That the States celebrate it, but no one else does."
As Brooke talks, she seems to relax a little, pleasantly surprised with her tutor. In fact, she actually looks disappointed when Brooke steers them back on topic.
"You really have nothing to apologize for. it really was interesting... too bad it won't be the kinds of things we're tested on." She stifles a sigh, looking back to her notes and flipping a few pages in her textbook to find the appropriate questions. "Right."
Brooke got to work on her questions. She liked that she would be able to finish most of her homework with this time as well as help someone else out. Plus Izzy seemed nice and Brooke didn't see there being a problem working with her in the foreseeable future
( ... )
Izzy also got to work on her questions, not really having trouble with them, despite the new material.
When asked the questions, she answers, of course, then discusses intelligently. She is otherwise subdued and quiet, though, still not happy about 'needing' the tutoring.
As they both finish with the questions, she closes her notebook, her attention drawn to Brooke as she notes the other girl's stillness and the distressed look she bears. She follows Brooke's gaze to the football team and Josh's vicinity, then looks back to Brooke, wondering which one of the boys was the cause of her unhappiness. Despite not really knowing her tutor, she looks concerned and sympathetic. She does not, however, say anything, feeling as though it would be probing and inappropriate.
Instead, she just slips her notebook into her bag, as well. "What should we do next?" Her tone is hesitant, also gentler than it was.
"Um..thanks?" Brooke was slightly confused at the girl's almost hurt tone. "I'm sure sharing will be fine. Which chapter are you guys studying in class?" She decided to ignore the sudden weirdness.
"Okay..."Brooke said in a distracted voice as she skimmed the unit summary. She flipped to the first page. "Okay so we're back to Columbus. Only this time, we get some of his friends, Amerigo Vespucci and The Vikings. This should be a good reinforcement for history." Brooke hoped she didn't come off as geeky as she felt.
Izzy stays silent as Brooke reads over the summary, not wanting to interrupt. She nods. "Well good, hopefully that will make things easier, then. Though I don't think I know who Vespucci was. And I mean, everyone knows The Vikings.. but how does this relate to American geography?"
Brooke took the proffered sketchpad looking at the rough sketch. Though it was incomplete, she could still see how absolutely breathtaking the place was. She wondered if it had been hard for Izzy to leave behind. She didn't dare ask. They'd seemed to be on weird emotional rollercoaster and Brooke didn't think she could handle another twist.
"Wow, this is beautiful. I bet it's nothing in comparison to the real thing, huh?" She asked wistfully. "Oh, and I was kidding about the transcript. Well at least half kidding."
The wistful nature of the sketch itself, along with Izzy's expression probably answer Brooke's question, even unasked.
She nods, smiling a little, "Yeah, the sketch doesn't even begin to really capture it. It's a wonderful place. If you get a chance to go to the Laurentiens, I highly recommend it." A glint of humour in her eyes as she responds to the latter half of your statement, "Don't worry about it. I wasn't offended."
"I will definitely keep that in mind..."Brooke handed the pad back to Izzy before clearing her throat. "We are way off topic here. I think it's time we get back to geography and those vikings."
Izzy accepts the sketchpad, again closing it carefully and setting it back down where it was. She stifles a sigh at the return to geography, even though she knows it makes sense. "Yeah, you're right... so... vikings?"
"There you are, hun. I've been looking for you all over..." Nicole entered the library, headed towards Brooke. Though why Brooke was in the library, she had no idea. It wasn't as if the girl needed to study. Lucky whore. "I was thinking we could go pick up the stuff we needed for your part...oh...what's this? I'm not interrupting your downward spiral, am I?"
Brooke's head shot up at the sudden sound of Nicole's voice. She quickly looked over at Izzy and noticed the other girl shrank away when she saw Nicole. Uh oh...another Nicole victim...
"Uh hey Nic, what are you doing here?" Brooke stood from the table and walked over to her friend.
