this is unbelievable. she's the kind of girl i need to be teaching. when i was reading my kids a story about MLking all they could muster up is 'down with the white man.' i felt awkward.

but don't you believe that a lot of this had to come from her parents teaching it to her? (and i don't mean just vocabulary but rather these thoughts/more-advanced-ideas?) i mean the idea of nationalism, that doesnt really start until 6th/7th grade which is what, age 11/12 and then the idea isnt really fully explained until high school, no?

"I don't think there's anything wrong with my poem. I was trying to tell them the straight-up truth," Autum said. "I'm trying to tell them not to fight because they're killing the brothers and sisters."

i mean, this quote doesn't sound like a seven year old. even if a seven year old has the advanced vocabulary, advanced maturity, and advanced investigative/thinking skills - they still tend to sound more like a seven year old and not a 18 year old.

yeah but youre assuming that intellectual emotional etc development is cut in stone -- ie is genetically or bioligially determined and thus independent of socialization. i would argue that this girl is being challenged in the right ways and is speaknig like a 7 year old "should" and that most 7 year olds are kept in a state of extended ignorance (read: childhood) due to social pressures / privileges (ie.. we dont need them to be out birthing babies and working for a living until at lesat 10 yeas later ( ... )

all points are valid, very valid.

maybe this child should be used as an example of why "intelligent" and "world-minded" people should home school their children? do you think this child would have been able to progresse the way that she has without home schooling?
