What happened? Were you pressured out of dealing with the areas of scholarship you wanted because they were explicitly feminist? Yipes. But, sadly, not surprising if so.
Well not explicitly. MSU is a state school, and the budget cuts right now are tremendous. The philosopher that I came here to work with is retiring, and bc of the cuts they aren't going to replace her with someone of the same caliber (she's a big deal) and so that feels like a slap in the face. Beyond that, for all the talk about combining theory and practice I'm not really seeing it. I feel like the past 3 years I've been doing lots of theory and haven't really been encouraged or supported when it comes to wanting to do something concrete with that. I was told at a meeting where I asked my committee if they would support me pursuing an MA in Social Work that I was being bred for academia and they said no. I feel like there's a lot of theory about combining theory and practice, and that maybe that has taken the place of actual practice.
