Silly Grace / Who's Left?

Feel free to click on it for the whole pic, but this is probably the best part. I basically worked on this one so that I could get it out of the way. That's a bit unseemly for me, especially since I would ask myself before I worked on something, "Would I work on this if time was not a limitation?" I had to let that go because I started applying it ( Read more... )

What about Stephen Lynch and Flight of the Conchords? FotC is a great TV show, but they're also pretty damn good on a stage... and Stephen Lynch is flippin' hilarious on top of being able to actually sing.

At first I thought you might have intentionally left them out, because of the genre of comedy they perform... but, you did mention Dmetri, and he delivers many of his jokes in song as well.

Pablo Francisco's entertaining too... but seems to have fallen off the radar lately. (Unless I'm just looking at the wrong radar monitor.)

Holy shit balls, I totally forgot both, although Lynch hasn't done anything in a long while - same for Pablo. I'd have to put FotC with the Dmetri/Oswalt/Attell group; their next season or stand-up show is going to reveal whether it's a fluke or not.

I second Lynch and Conchords, but they're more in the musical comedy section. And when comparing Carlin or Hicks to any of them, it's like comparing apples to anteaters.

I do have to add one comedian to the list, although he has no place next to Carlin or Hicks... and that's Steve Martin: a brilliant man with a goofy sense of humor. Not many people would have thought to put on bunny ears and play the banjo. His comedy stretches from stand up, to musical to magic to the absurd. There's something in there for everyone.

Also, I died a little the day we lost George Carlin. Even now when I think about it, it depresses me. We're not in need of more comedians. What we really need is a satirist and social critic (and Lewis Black just isn't quite there).

It's going to be a while before a social critic comes out, just in light of the Stewart/Colbert combo. They seem to running the bases well & regularly. Also, an Olbermann/Maddow combo are doing their fair share with an hour apiece on MSNBC.

Sounds like I'll have to check Martin out & it never hurts to have more comedians. How else are we going to get the next Carlin or Hicks?

Yeah, those four have been keeping tabs on things... I just miss it in angry stand-up form.

Now, Steve Martin's comedy is just downright silly, so don't expect anything life changing.
