Anime Names in HP Fanfic

Feb 24, 2007 20:11

I ran across a great fic recently that was just ruined completely because the author was an anime fangirl (as seems to be far too par for the course), and picked some lamebrain Japanese name for a character in her HP fic; in this particular case a white person picked a Japanese pseudonym ( Read more... )

I like to give my characters old-fashioned sort of names, like Mathilda or Albert, so they don't sound cool. Mind you, I don't write Mary Sue so my characters aren't cool. Like me. Sigh.

But your characters would be cool because they're not Mary Sues and they have realistic names. :)

*giggle* When I wrote my 'Sue parody, I made sure one of her seven names was mangled Japanese. She also got a Tolkienian name, a variant of "Raven", a couple canon-connected names, a French/Veela name, and a lame-ass, made-up last name. It was fun. I ended up calling her:

Marvola
Arwen
Raevyn
Yvette
Salazara
Umekiko
Elfynchyld

Parody is the stick with which I beat back the badfic.

Even worse than anime names are the *very* American names, which are enough to make the poor British reader feel quite faint on reading them: Melodee, Alyssa, Shauna, Paige, Kayla, Tiffany, Carlee...the list goes on.

Jumping in because this fascinates me. I remember reading a fic in another fandom once where everyone is English and has the most plain-sounding English names (James, Roger, Alice, Jane...) and the author sticks in an OC named "Amber." Kind of stuck out.

What surprised me was just the inclusion of Paige on the list. I never realized that one was particularly American. (Being American I just thought it was a plain name.)

As a Brit, Paige sounds screamingly American to me. I think sometimes, it is as you say, the author just isn't aware that the name they've chosen sounds American.

Harry wakes up, sneaks out when Mundungus skives off shift five minutes early, goes to Gringotts, gets the will, rages at Dumbledore, emancipates himself

Haaaaaaaaaaaaate.

No, I have seen this particular kind of fic many times. You might say it was my arch-nemesis.

Oh, I meant with the Voldemort's daughter and a bad Japanese name for her part. :)

But yeah, I've seen quite a few of the run-of-the-mill post-OotP type fics.

I just joined this community and yours is the first posting I've read. I agree with you totally, can you imagine the names some of these people will give their children? Just this past weekend a friend and I were wondering if a few years in the future the schools will be full of Hermiones and Nymphadoras the way they were filled with Jennifers and Caitlyns a few years ago.

I don't think Nymphadora is going to catch on because the it can easily be shortened into nympho and nobody wants that for their six year old daughter. Still, in 10-20 years I could see an influx of Hermiones.
