Harry groaned and dropped his head onto the table.
“I didn't ask for this Potter,” Pansy said sweetly, “I think that was your fault. Being the hero as usual after the war, and taking such good care for the prisoners.”
Harry lifted his head up and stared at her angrily. “Don't kid yourself, Parkinson. The only reason I'm doing this is because I know if anyone else took care of you that they'd end up strangling you themselves!”
“Being such a good boy, aren't we then?” She smiled sickly. “Taking such good care of little old me.” She looked at him with wide, innocent eyes.
“Don't push it, otherwise I may forget you're supposed to be under my protection,” he warned.
“I wouldn't dream of pushing anything.” She said innocently. “In case you forget, I wasn't one of the Slytherins who hid during the battle. I was the one who ended up saving your life after.”
Which was the main reason she was under Harry's protection until her trial at the Wizengamot. Why couldn't it have been someone else? He groaned internally. “I know that,” he said through gritted teeth. “Hence, why you're here.”
“And I thought it was just because you liked me,” she said mockingly, looking hurt.
Harry scoffed, and tried to cover it up with a cough. “Of course I do,” he said innocently, “Who wouldn't like someone who was a snob, stuck-up, hanging off whoever was handy, and a general airhead?”
“I'm not sure,” she said, her expression concentrated. “After all, who wouldn't like someone who had a constant hero-complex, cheated off his best-friend's schoolwork, constantly fought due to old House rivalries, and couldn't go one year without being in the newspaper?” She blinked innocently.
“Better to have a hero-complex than never do anything for myself.” He smirked at her, seeing the glimmer of anger in her eyes.
“There's a fine line between love and hate, Potter.” She said quietly. “And it seems like you're about to cross it.”
“Keep telling yourself that darling,” he mocked. “In the mean-time if your highness doesn't need anything else, I'm going to bed.”
“Go on darling, I wouldn't want you to lose your beauty sleep.”
“Not over you.” He winked at her, and left the room quickly and cast the spells that would keep him informed at all times of when and what she was doing.
He walked to his own bedroom slowly, trying to tamper down the emotions she'd raised in him. She'd always affected him, as much as he'd tried not to let her. She'd never know how close she was with what she said tonight. There was a thin line between love and hate, and he'd crossed from hate into love a long time ago.

She didn’t know how she managed to drag herself out of her room and made the imprudent decision of attending the wedding, but hell, she regretted it. She didn’t even know why she remained until the wedding reception.
Gazing at the groom, Pansy felt her heart shattered
She always held onto a piece of hope, believing that he would one day return the feelings she retained for him ever since their second year at Hogwarts, and now, that dream was shattered by a mere Mudblood -Hermione Granger.
It irritated her to no end that the girl he chose was their sworn enemy. Pansy never imagined that Draco would settle down with someone like her. For Merlin’s sake, he was the renowned playboy, along with the most wanted bachelor. It seemed definitely impossible for him to fall in love.
Even if the Dark Lord was defeated and the Malfoys decided to come clean with all the illegal transactions, she couldn’t believe that Lucius and Narcissa would allow their noble bloodline to be tainted with the blood of someone as Hermione Granger.
The hand around the glass of Firewhiskey tightened, along with her facial muscles. She could feel venom spreading through her veins. If she had a wand right now, she would attempt the Avada Kedavra on that Mudblood; even if it landed her in Azkaban
“Pull yourself together will you?” Daphne chided as she strolled up to her and eyed the somewhat concerned house-elf, before giving her order. “A Firewhiskey.”
“But who could have thought?” She continued, “Draco and Granger.”
She eyed them and took a sip of the red liquid from her glass. “But I guess it should’ve happened sooner so that you could be spared.”
Even though she felt somewhat sober, Pansy still managed to keep her head clear. She cast Daphne a dark look.
“Don’t worry. I’m pretty much over him.”
“Please,” the other witched drawled as she rolled her eyes, “If you were over him, you wouldn’t be thinking of using the Avada Kedavra. It’s written all over your face. Now do all the guests a favour and stop the hate vibes. There are so many potential candidates here.”
“I have high expectations, you know,” Pansy declared haughtily.
“If the one you chose was Malfoy, I’m sure that Potter can par up to his level.” Daphne teased, her eyes shimmered in amusement as she gazed over to the wizard at the other end of the room.
Pansy almost snorted as she lifted her own glass of wine. Just as she was going to take a sip, she was drawn to a pair of eyes of the rarest, purest green.
Harry James Potter raised an eyebrow at her, only then, to give his distinguished boyish-grin and tip the glass of his own Firewhiskey towards her like a true gentleman.
Pansy cracked a smile as she returned his greetings.
Harry James Potter, huh? She thought amusingly.
And that was the start of a new relationship.

“Bertie Botts?”
Pansy wrinkled her nose daintily. “I hate those! I’d much prefer squeaking sugar mice.”
“Where’s your sense of adventure?” Harry nudged her, green eyes smiling. “Your turn.”
“Nettle tea?”
Harry grimaced. “None for me, thanks. Butterbeer’s my sort of drink.”
“Peppermint ice cream?”
“I’m more of a vanilla person.” Pansy sighed, annoyed. “Harry, what are we doing? We can’t even reach a common ground with the type of food we like!”
“Pansy…”
“It’s such a basic topic, but we both hate each other’s favourite foods. How are we going to be able to live with one another? It’ll be impossible. We’re too different! And then-”
Harry took her hands, causing her to stop mid-tirade.
“Pansy, our relationship isn’t going to be based on food. I’d like to think we’re together because of more than that. And even if we don’t have similar tastes, I know we’ll work it through.”
Pansy kept her glance on their intertwined fingers, doubts still running rampant through her mind. They’d been together for two years; two gloriously wonderful years. And only today, when Harry light-heartedly suggested that they’d talk about their favourite foods, did she find out how wide the gap between them was.
This would just be the start. And when they became cohabitants, they would discover more and more all the little differences and quirks that they had, and slowly, these irritancies would escalate… and-she didn’t even want to think of that. It was too painful to comprehend. She shook her head.
“Hey, we’ve already gotten past your mother; what can be more difficult? You analyse every little thing. Sometimes, too much.” Harry reached out, tucking away the hair shielding her face behind her ear and gently drew up her chin, locking his eyes with hers.
His eyes looked so serious, secure. Slowly, she nodded, her lips lifting in a small, albeit uncertain smile.
“One last question.” Pansy whispered, leaning closer. “How about… me?”
“I like you.”
“Only ‘like’?” Pansy said, a mischievous twinkle in her dark eyes.
“No. It’s more than that,” Harry said. “I love you. And you love me. Look at that. Common ground.”
And with that, Harry closed the sliver of space between them, his lips meeting hers softly.
They were never one for public displays of affection, bar the goodbye kiss on the cheek, but at this moment, Pansy found out the meaning of ‘the world fell away’ as all she could think of was him.
Pansy believed him.

Pansy noticed how their foreheads met briefly once their kiss ended. Ginny had brought Harry lunch - homemade, of course - since Ginny was the ever kind and dutiful wife. He was always touching her - her arm, her knee, the small of her back - the places of caring and love. Pansy turned away when their whispers and soft giggles became too much.
---
Harry’s hands dug into her hips as his mouth made its way down Pansy’s neck. His touch was demanding.
“Can you stay the night?”
“You know I can’t. Why do you always ask?”
Knowing he didn’t really want to hear the answer, she gave none. As he pushed her dress up farther, he whispered, “I only have an hour.”
Pansy sighed. He expected her to be grateful. And she was. But she wanted more. Be patient, she thought. He’ll change. Just love him and he’ll come around. She slid her hands around Harry’s neck and reached up for a kiss. He denied her and carried her to the bedroom instead.
---
Pansy watched as he began dressing. Time was up.
“You sure you can’t- ”
He interrupted her with a heavy sigh. She wanted to hear longing but she only heard guilt. “We should stop. This is getting to be too much. I don’t want you to have… you shouldn’t have these expectations. I can’t fulfill them. I told you I couldn’t when this whole mess started!”
Mess. No, it wasn’t messy. It was simple. He loved his wife and hated Pansy. She could see in his eyes that he hated her for the things they did together, the lies they told everyone and the fact that she’d fallen in love with him - for that he hated her the most.
So Pansy lied. “Don’t be ridiculous. No strings attached. I just wanted have to a bit more fun. It’s early… I told mother I’d visit this week,” she said casually as she made her way to the bath. He was long gone when she finished.
---
Harry slipped a note onto her desk. Tonight. 8 o’clock. She smiled. Maybe she had it all wrong. He’d never been the one to initiate a meeting. It was a sign - a wonderful sign! He didn’t hate her; he just loathed the situation they were in. All he needed was a little more time, and maybe a little push and he’d fall for her too.
A soft laugh rang though the air. Ginny’s laugh. She’d brought him lunch again. And when he kissed her Pansy saw it. In his eyes she read love, remorse and hope. No regret, no longing - and it scared Pansy to the core.
She glanced again at the note. No, tonight wouldn’t be about passion or love - it would be the end.

Her moxie only takes her so far before her lack of self-confidence throws up a rogue hurdle. Sometimes she rushes at it with a leap of faith; graceful as a gazelle and poisonous as a cobra. Other times-most of the time-she hesitates and second guesses her worth in his eyes.
While she dithers, she thinks of how she wants to tell him that she finds him handsome, dashing, funny and a little bit strange. She wants to tell him that she loves him so desperately and undeviatingly. Instead she mocks his scar, his spectacles. She belittles his friends, his house. She shows him a brilliant mimicry of loathing and disfavor.
It is pathetic and juvenile but she’s determined to not let him pass until she’s sure he’s seen her. Until she can own in her seventeen year old heart the knowledge that Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived, knows that Pansy Parkinson exists in the world.
She doesn’t see Hermione Granger purse her lips with chagrin as she fights a reprimand, nor does Pansy notice that Ron Weasley is sneering at her in disgust as he whispers into his best mate’s ear. It doesn’t matter anyway because all of her attention lies with Harry’s beguilingly intense eyes as they pass over her. They are filled with seething antipathy and extreme disgust, a bitter desire to avoid the likes of Pansy Parkinson.
In slow, agonizing motion, her heart shatters like delicate crystal.
It’s almost too much to bear and she fights the red hot heat of discomfiture that attacks her cheeks. Humiliation and despair were never part of her plan and she’s never quite sure how to handle it. She won’t allow herself to cry and she absolutely refuses to tuck up her chin and turn away in defeat.
So she laughs.
It’s wicked and harsh; echoing along the corridor. It hides her embarrassment, it masks her failure. Everyone turns to see her spectacle and Pansy pretends that she has won, that she has fatally wounded Harry’s ego, but she knows she has on wrecked hers.
And she promises herself, like she did last time and the time before, that the next time will be different. That when she sees him again, she will only scrounge up her courage to stand fierce in the face of her own self inflicted obstacle to do what she should have done from the beginning. Make eye contact and softly smile as she whispers a simple hello.

Foolish to walk over here in this weather. Potter you’re not going to be satisfied until you get yourself sick or something.” Pansy frowned at him. “You could have apparated inside you idiot.” It wasn’t like he hadn’t down it a dozen times before.
“That would have been even more foolish.” Harry grinned running his hand through his unruly hair. When Pansy was angry with him Harry he never wanted to apparate over to her loft. The first and only time he did she threw a crystal vase Millicent Bulstrode had even her as a Christmas present at his head. He learned his lesson the first time.
“Well don’t expect me to ask you in just because you had the dumb idea to walk over in the rain.” She stopped looking at him through the small window; her eyes were glued to her floor while she spoke to him.
Harry leaned his weight on the door and tried to get comfortable. Knowing Pansy he would be standing out here all night but he wasn’t going to leave until they settled this. “I know why you’re mad at me and you-”
Pansy couldn’t help but to scoff before she interrupted him. “Since you have it all figured out Potter…tell me why I’m upset.”
“I should have told you about Dean’s bachelor party.” Harry said brushing the water off his face with his sleeve. “I wasn’t planning to go but Ron talked me into it at the last minute and if I knew you were going to be angry with me for-” This time Harry was a bit grateful that Pansy interrupted him because he was beginning to ramble.
“That is not what I’m angry about Potter.” He could be so clueless sometimes.
Harry was certain that was what set Pansy off. Something told him to call her before he went to Dean’s party just to make sure she was okay with it. Now it turns out he was dead wrong about that.
“Then…you’re angry with me because…” He trailed off waiting for Pansy to fill him in on why he was on her bad side right now.
“Because you told everyone about ‘us’ without asking me if I was alright with people knowing just yet.”
“You said you were ready!” Harry only told Ron and Hermione though. He thought about telling all his friends during the bachelor party but he thought it was better to just let Dean have his night.
“I said I was ready to have our relationship be exclusive-”
“Being my girlfriend means my friends have to know about us Pansy. And you didn’t say exclusive, you agreed to become my girlfriend Pansy.” Harry said standing off of the door. “I’m sorry I didn’t ask first to be sure. Can you let me in now? It’s freezing out here and I don’t want to catch a cold.”
