laurence was a manitoba-born author who wrote, among other things, a five book cycle about a fictional town called manawaka, manitoba; she is definitely one of the standard-bearers of canlit. the stone angel was her first book, and probably a good introduction; her work is very introspective and frequently quite wrenching.

ishiguro is a british author whose most famous book is the remains of the day, though i think i liked never let me go as much, if not more. his writing style is deceptively cool and straight-forward, but unexpectedly latches into you like a fish hook.

morrison is the sort of writer whose books are so emotionally gruelling that i can only manage one a year. she writes a lot about african-american characters trying to reconcile with individual and collective history in america. beloved is amazing - she won the pulitzer prize for it, too.
