Jimmy Novak, from Pontiac, Illinois, is a devout man. Oh, and he can hear angels. Castiel, specifically. (You show a man one miracle and he'll lend you his body for all of time.) While the rational part of his mind thought he might be going crazy, his faith in God and his growing tension with his wife lead him to give himself up to His will in exchange for his family's protection.
"Thy will be done," became a bit more literal than he had in mind, I'm sure. And so it was; he was blessed and became body of the angel, Castiel. He wished for this. Prayed for it. And just like that, he disappeared from the plane of existence. Or at least until someone pulled Castiel out of his vessel.
After the ordeal with Castiel, he thought himself to have lost his faith in God and religion. Though really, this is an act of immature defiance. Denying what he knows exists is his way of putting that part of his life behind him. Or so he hoped.
After all, the only thing Jimmy wants is to go home. To forget the demons, the angels, the Winchesters; he's done enough "service" to last him a lifetime. (An eternity, in the end.) He just wants to see his family, even if it means lying to them for their sake. Even if it meant painting himself as unstable to win back their trust. He understands now; his delusions and his hopes, he learned it was all irrelevant when compared to the things had before in this world.
"I just wanna come home again. Please understand. I'll wait for you. We can start out small." His family is all that matters to him, have I said this enough? Threaten his family and he will just fall to pieces. Pray the Lord your soul to keep, Jimmy, because that bargain is costing you dearly.
