Title: The Things We Can't Control
Author:
prettyorianna
Pairing: Akame.  Others to be added later.
Rating: NC-17.
Genre: crime drama au
Beta by: my cat Gemma.  okay, seriously, nobody
Disclaimer: I don't own KAT-TUN, any of its members, any other JE people.  I write this for fun and for other fans of these fine folks.  But don't steal my
plots, mmkay?  I put a great deal of time into them except for when I'm randomly spastically spitting words onto a page.  But I value those too...

Summary:  Two criminals with vastly different styles meet by chance one day.  They immediately clash but is that all they'll ever be?  How much is fate and how much choice?  And how will their meeting change the world around them?

Author's Note: I know this chapter is short - it's actually only half of what I intended for it - but I know that I won't have time to write tomorrow or most of Thursday or during the weekend, so I'd rather give you this despite being just under 1000 words than to make you wait even longer.

BANNER BY DESHISORABA!! THE MOST AWESOME BANNER EVER AND I WILL FIGHT ANYONE WHO DISAGREES!

Warning: This gets graphic often occasionally, containing at the very least foul language, character death, nefarious crimes, rape, etc etc.

Chapter 94 ~The Suspicious Behavior of Miss S~
For a month and a half, Kame and Shuta followed Suzuki-san around.  They wrote down everywhere she went and then spent the early parts of their nights going back to those places, asking questions, looking for Marika-chan.

For a month and a half, they found nothing.

And as more and more days passed, Yurina was becoming increasingly volatile, snapping at both men with the slightest provocation.  At first, Shuta just let her push him around, out of gratitude for taking him in, but after about a month he started going toe-to-toe with her.

During one of their particularly loud shouting matches, Yurina - apparently finally snapping - slugged Shuta.  That turned their verbal battle into a physical one.  They trashed the place as they went at each other all-out even with Kame shouting at them, trying to break up the fight.  How had things ended up like this?  And Shuta… hitting a woman?  Had he seriously misjudged the man?

Yurina and Shuta were so evenly matched that it was exhaustion that finally ended the battle.  Kame angry that they trashed the apartment but Yurina was smiling, something he hadn’t seen since Marika was taken.

“I really needed that…” Yurina sighed.

Shuta responded with a laugh, saying, “I know.”

Kame decided that he just didn’t understand at all.

After that, Yurina started going to her self-defense classes again.  Kame could tell she was still hurting, longing to have her daughter back, but she was doing better now that she wasn’t moping around the apartment all day.

In the meanwhile, Shuta and Kame continued their search, following Suzuki-san around day after day.  The only thing they seemed to be accomplishing was discovering more about each other.  Actually, despite not having as much well world experience (Shuta’s kind phrasing though they both knew exactly what they were really saying), Shuta was not some naïve idealist nor was he corrupted by the former wealth of his family like Kame’s father.

Kame’s birthday passed unnoticed.  In fact, it was the first of March before he realized he was even nineteen.  He didn’t care, though.  He was much more concerned with finding Marika than with celebrating the fact that the earth circled the sun for another 365 days since his last birthday.

It was the first Saturday in March that changed everything.

The two of them were following Suzuki-san still.  Her Saturdays were usually spent at home, with the occasional trip to the grocery store or the gym.  Kame had considered not even bothering to follow her on Saturdays and Sundays anymore, but before he could tell Shuta to take them home, Suzuki-san walked out her front door.  She was on her cell phone and looked rather pleased with herself but nervous at the same time.  It was obvious she was going somewhere unusual for her and that rekindled Kame’s fading hope that he might actually find Marika.

Suzuki-san still hadn’t figured out she was being followed.  Kame wasn’t sure whether it was because of Shuta’s excellent driving or if she was just unobservant.  Kame liked to think that if he were being followed for over a month, with the same car over and over again, he’d have noticed.

She didn’t.

Maybe she just had a lot on her mind.  After following her for so long, he’d realized that though he would probably never forgive her for what she did, that she was otherwise not a bad person.  She seemed to really believe in her cause and from some of the people he and Shuta had questioned, he realized she must actually be pretty brave to face those people.  They might not care about their children while they have them but they sure as hell put up a fight when someone tried to take them away.  That explained why the police sometimes met her at one house or another.

This time, though, she wasn’t meeting cops.  She wasn’t meeting horrible parents or going to check on a foster home.

This time, she drove past the river into the good side of the city, all the way to a park.  She parked her car and just sat there for two hours.

Kame vaguely remembered coming to this park when he was little.  His father put a stop to that when he stopped allowing Kame to leave the house without him.

When Suzuki-san finally got out of her car, it was starting to get late.  The sun was low in the sky.  Almost everyone had left.

Kame asked Shuta to stay with the car and he carefully followed Suzuki-san.

Even though she left her car in the west parking lot, she crossed almost the entire breadth of the park.  Not just the public parts, either.  She was on her cell phone the whole time but Kame was too far away to hear what she was saying or who she was talking to.  He was afraid to follow more closely.  She knew what he looked like.

She did eventually stop, though.  They were on the edge of the woods so Kame was able to creep closer and stay hidden.  By the time he got close enough to hear her, she had already put her phone back in her purse.

The whole thing was just strange.

When he saw who she was meeting, Kame’s breath caught in his throat.

His father.

Oh, god… why was she meeting with Papa K?  He’d sicced her on Yurina so shouldn’t he consider it a job well done and have moved on?  But here he was.

A horrible thought suddenly occurred to Kame.

She hadn’t given Marika to him, had she?

No… no, he wouldn’t take her, would he?  He had resented raising Kame on his own.  He wouldn’t want to be saddled with a baby.

At least, that’s what Kame kept telling himself…

Because the alternative was just too horrible to accept.
