Misc. Gronk and the Horrible Story of the Dead Bird!

May 18, 2007 01:58

Spent mad money at the Scarlet Garden last weekend. I bought a black satin bustle skirt, an absinthe-green cincher (flimsy Catherine Coatney, but I'm already getting one new custom corset, can't afford two), a frilly black blouse and a t-shirt (black, natch) with a green Deco lady on it. All but the last will make their debuts at Convergence. ( Read more... )

Yeah, a five day dead bird doesn't do anyone any good. And a shame, too, it would have made great art fodder. (Half my art involves bones these days.)

I am completely fascinated by bones. Have you seen this place?

It's amazing in real life, too, if you ever spend time in the Bay Area.

Wow.
A skeletal woodpecker would have been beautiful!
If in the event you ever do need bones, my husband keeps dermestid beetles in our backyard for this exact purpose.
We have cleaned anything from deceased (and beloved) housepets, roadkill (it raises some eyebrows when you pull over the road to retrieve it)and creatures that have just randomly dropped dead for no apparent reason. Michael is somewhat notorious among our circle for his beetle exploits. Ask Carolee or Roger about it sometime. :)

I'm looking forward to Convergence in general, but have been making a point not to look too closely or let myself get too excited about any particular planned events. I knew as soon as i saw the bid that this is a bunch of kids who don't know Portland, aren't really our peeps, and are making a heap of uninformed fibs because they have the absurd idea that this could be a money-making venture for them. I feel for the actual Portland scene-makers who've been roped into helping because they want to keep this from becoming the train wreck that ruins their home's reputation ( ... )

Yes, thinking of this as a house party would probably be the best way to manage the uncertainty and annoyance. It's just difficult for me because people I like are really hurting, and I can't stand that, plus I am supposed to be modelling, and I hate having my commitments up in the air. It's particularly challenging with darling Baby in the mix ( ... )

How awesome would it be if we could alter the space-time continuum? That's so much more exciting than anything someone else's bad planning could ruin.

I've been taking some cold comfort in the fact that i've had plenty of free time to for like the cheese festival and sticking more feathers onto tiny hats precisely because Seattle didn't win the bid for this Convergence. No matter how any of the official or unofficial events go this weekend, i need to remember that i have the luxury to enjoy it because i'm not too terribly over-committed with event planning and damage control to properly feed myself. It's a bit difficult to look at it from such a selfish perspective when i know how hard some good people have worked to turn this into a fun party after all, and to show your lovely city's best face as well as they can. It would be more difficult to ignore the opportunities to have a nice weekend with a bunch of people i'll be happy to see there no matter what is or is not planned.

I've been getting more into beets lately--I think they're yummy--but I still can't stand those ones that come in a can. I like those little potatoes with butter and dill, too. I've never tried them with vinaigrette, I'll have to give that a try sometime! It sounds great.

I tend to think all canned vegetables are a waste. Some canned fruit is okay, and I use canned beans a lot, but taste-test a canned beet and a fresh one, or green beans, or peas or anything, and see which one comes out on top.

The potatoes couldn't be simpler. I love them with butter and dill, too, but if you just toss them with some vinegar, olive oil, S+P, and finely chopped red onion while they are still hot, they taste fantastic room temp or cold if you don't want a hot dish.
