middle school book help

Sep 20, 2010 13:46

Hey guys,

I'm working on a web site for a middle school library and I'm looking for good classic or current books that are popular with middle school aged kids. I read a lot of teen fic, but I've realized that they are probably more appropriate for high schools, not middle.

Any help, or links to good lists would be much appreciated. :)

This is a link to Bright Futures Press http://brightfuturespress.com/shop/category/middle-school/- they carry the Career Ideas for Kids and Virtual Apprentice book series. These are not fiction books. They are fun books developed for middle schoolers to help them figure out what they want to be when they get older. Probably not exactly what you are looking for, but since I wrote some of them, I couldn't resist the opportunity for a plug! :)

lol, thanks, quiddichmum. :) Not really what I need for my purposes, but I've definitely forwarded the link to the librarian :)

Well, as far as I remember, back in middle school I pretty much read a lot of Harry Potter books and Princess Diaries among other books, though they were Portuguese ones and I don't really think they're translated to English...

My youngest brother is eleven and he's obsessed with the Percy Jackson series, though. Can't tell if it's very good but I'm tempted to check it out.

I googled a little and found this site: http://www.shelfari.com/groups/10169/discussions/127919/Any-suggestions-for-good-books-for-boys-age-11---14-

Hope it helps,

I think HG would be a bit too old, but maybe not. I can't remember what I read in middle school anymore. it all blends together as just...school, lol.

I LOVE all of Tamora Pierce's books, and I didn't discover them until high school, but they are middle school appropriate, although her Circle of Magic universe is more so than her Tortal universe, since the later has brief mentions of sex, but nothing above tv-14 ratings, maybe even pg-13. Nothing graphic at all. I consider Circle of Magic more unisex than Tortal just because one of the main characters is a boy, and they don't really have any romance, but strong friendship themes ( ... )

ooohh, Dear America, I loved those, lol. I'll look some of these others up too. I was going to go look up Newberry books eventually, to add more classics. Right now I have a bunch of sci-fi/fantasy b/c that's what I like, lol...it's hard to not just put my favorites on there. I agree with you about Twilight, I think of it as older. Thanks for all the suggestions. :)
