This was so perfectly done I am rendered completely speechless. Really. I am in awe of the way you managed to go just far enough and also your understanding of the results.
Like this: She looks around, naming items. Television, book, table, laser tag gun. Nothing feels real, it’s all a bit fuzzy around the edges. What a perfect illustration of disassociation.
So, so, so glad you posted.

And now I shall be nosy so feel free to ignore this part if I shouldn't ask, but you said in the note at the beginning that the twisted (and I'd actually call it brilliant) thinking that created this sort of story might be an occupational hazard and that made me oh so curious as to what your occupation actually is (why yes, I do have rather a large dose of shameless Castle inquisitiveness in me).

No problem with the curiosity! I work with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and have studied both pretty intensely. It leads to some twisted thinking.

My favorite line was, "She’s caught him reading articles about ‘what to do when a loved one is raped’ and ‘how to treat rape survivors.’" That just has such a reality to it that it really struck me as something that both Castle would do, and something that anyone in that situation might do. It really drove home the fact that they are emotionally struggling and they are both going through a healing process. I think that makes this a really interesting piece because the hurt/comfort is so balanced, as opposed to one person hurting and one person comforting. They love each other so much that they are forcing each other to go through the motions together.
Okay, that got long-winded, and I apologize ;) Anyway, thank you for posting.

Don't apologize for it being long-winded! I'm glad it struck as true to you, because I worry I get caught up in my own head too much and don't lay things out well.

It's such a compliment that it pulled you in like that.

And like tinlizzie82 said about the disassociation, spot on.
Kudos!

It was tricky trying to find the balance between over the top and real when it came to the emotional side, so I'm glad you thought it was awesome.
