Inka is 20 months, VERY smart and perceptive but not putting words together yet (except in rare instances). This made the following "exchange" over who was going to be served breakfast first especially funny ( Read more... )

Fascinating, isn't it, how kids acquire language. My first kid spoke only a few words at 12 months and about 10 by 18 months. We had hearing tests and he could distinguish between lots of nouns - things which kids of that age could not. No hearing problem. He used gestures a helluva lot to communicate.
"Ba" stood for Sobaka, the dog, and for me, Mama. He used 'ko' for everything else.

Later I used Glenn Doman's book on teaching reading to little kids. He was reading at age 2 and then the words tumbled out. This is not cause and effect. It just happened that way.

By the time he was 5 no one had an inkling that his speech was delayed.

Hmpf. His understanding of language wasn't delayed.

Keep a record of all this. It is so good to look back when the kids are older.

I like the dog's name - Russian for dog :-)

Well, getting Inka's hearing checked is on my list, but only because she's never been screened and because it's on my mind, since Bubla had a hearing impairment before we got that fixed. I think Inka's just showing typical signs of trying to be bilingual+...but in any case, she's not delayed at this point, she's just not talking as much as one would expect from looking at her (she looks/acts SO mature!). So people go up and try to start conversations, and she just looks at them like "What do YOU want?"
:-) And I do love the all-purpose words they come up with.
