oh man... my heart...

Stories like this... I can understand Sam's point of view - I really can. and I can see Dean's love. And then I get so freaking angry at Sam for ignoring him once he got to Stanford! Dean did everything and - gah!

the point is this is wonderful. I think you have their characters down, and I am just going to collect my little pieces of broken heart.

Thank you so much!

I agree. My gut instinct is always to write off Sam's rebellion as just teen angst, but when you look at it, he really does have reason to be frustrated with the way they live. But I get angry at him too for ignoring Dean :(

Glad it worked for you!

This hurt...because both the reader and Dean know what is coming...The anticipation always hurt more than the sting*...

Watching Dean fix what he can because he can't do anything to fix John and Sam...If Sam would just tell him he was going to college, Dean would tell Sam he was proud...Having Dean wish Sam would just tell him was especially sad...

He wished he had known at the time, the last morning of feeling good, being healthy, having his whole family. He’d known it was one of the last, but he thought if he had known it was the very last, he might at least have made pancakes--I know this feeling, and it tore my heart out...

*But the end actually did hurt worse...

Magnificent story.... I loved how you interwove the theme of "taking apart before putting back together" throughout, especially that last line! Loved that Dean knew Sam's plans and supported him in every way he could. A wonderful, heartbreaking look at caregiving, sacrificing Dean.

I love fics dealing with the topic of Sam deciding to go to Stanford and Dean letting him go, and this one was exquisite. Painful, bleak and hopeless because it was so clear that no matter how hard Dean tried, he couldn't keep his family together, but also showing the love between Sam and Dean that never really went away...

Thank you!

Thank you! I was hoping the brotherly bond between Sam and Dean wouldn't get too obscured by Sam's anger and Dean's sadness. I'm glad you thought it worked!

Seriously, procrastin8or9, this is not procrastinating, this is freaking amazing. Genuinely, the talent people in this fandom have is amazing. You've got Dean perfectly, and sam as well - so many people portray him going to college as selfish, and I don't understand - it was college ??
This is going on my favourite fic list.

Thank you!

I think it was selfish in the sense that he knew how much it would hurt Dean and John for him to leave, but you're right, it's what people his age typically do, and in most cases, should do. It's never so black and white, I think.

I'm really glad it worked for you!
