>> Chapter 3: Pilgrim's Rest
Part 3: Bad Religion
Joyous day? Are you mad? Look around you! The town is on the verge of being overrun by demons!
We are sorry for the citizens of Underport. They reject our calls for understanding. They take up arms against the night and so they are drowned by their own anger. We shall save them with our love and with our prayer.
Love alone can save us now. Come, friends, lay down your arms and join us in our pilgrimage of peace.
Peace? Love? Prayer? By all the sixteen corners of the lowest Counterplanes, this is too much to bear. I think I'm going to be ill. Can we hit these loathsome creatures, too?
Dear pilgrims, might I ask what brings you here to Crone's Craw?
We come to offer prayer to the Gods in the uncovered Cathedral. News of its discovery reached our churches late last summer, and we have crossed fire and ice to proclaim our joy within it.
The creatures that rise from the dark earth are not demons. They are Mother Medea's sorrowful reaction to man's encroachment upon her subterranean realm.
Join hands and walk with us to pray for Her forgiveness, as so many of our brothers and sisters have done before. No harm will come to us, I promise you.
It is an intriguing proposition. There is a higher order to the universe. I had always assumed it to be ambivalent to the concerns of men, but perhaps I was wrong.
The demons won't touch them if they're unarmed. Could love be the answer?
Love? Don't make me laugh. It's nothing more than the stirring of chemicals in that jug-like head of yours. Those who are unprepared to defend themselves with force will perish by it. That is the way all things work.
Let's get heroing!
You three? I knew the situation was grim, but I didn't think we were that desperate... I hope I'm wrong about this, but we've binned our hopes on so many only to have them crushed.
Be careful out there. Those monsters are vicious, and they'll attack anyone they think is a threat. I don't want the job of carrying whatever bits they throw back off to the morgue again.
And into the grimdarkness we go!
New enemies!
The Batroc (left) is immune to Ethereal damage, so no poison - and they have decent piercing and concussive resistance, too. Best way to go is magic.
The Chaot (right), on the other hand, has a decent bit of magic resistance (but not as good as the Batroc's resistance to the others). However, it also has a huge pile of chi, which absorbs damage from piercing and concussive sources.
Thus, the name of the game is magic!
Unfortunately, I STILL can't use Swordfaith, so Denever kind of sucks here.
Visible here is PyanPau's Sprite Summon skill - the little orb next to his head. It boosts his magic resistance and adds Ethereal damage to his attacks.
PyanPau also has the Wrath skill, making him the big damage dealer of the party against these enemies. Denever will just play defense, healing himself and buffing the party's armor.
Also note the Rose Pilgrims in the background, walking by unharmed.
This is the biggest reason magic damage is essential here - I can take these things out without touching that huge pile of chi it has stored up - and regenerating.
We've seen Demonites before, but these new things swarming Denever ineffectually are Lightshows! They are completely immune to piercing damage.
Continuing with my crazy skill showcase, here's two more!
Ionae is using Flashbang, which does concussive damage and briefly stuns the target. Denever is using Charge, which doesn't do anything on his turn...
...But then the next attack he does is supercharged!
Also present here is Powder Imps from Ionae, which act as a temporary barrier, blocking enemy attacks.
In other news, these enemies are chumps who have got nothing on me.
When at low health, Chaots have the ability to drain health from their allies. Annoying, but no big deal.
And we're through!
There's two areas I can get to from here, but I know what I want! TO THE CATHEDRAL OF EDGES
There's pilgrim's robes strewn all over the flor, but no sign of their owners. Where are they?
There's some evidence of a struggle, but I can't see any sign of them. Wherever they went, they went there naked.
Save point and insanely creepy decor give an idea of what's coming up!
What are you doing here? Where are the pilgrims? Are those...
...their bones?
Dear boy, the fools were most delicious.
Their addled minds not the least suspicious?
They knelt before me, blind and dumb.
Their haggard screams were too much fun.
Y-You vile monster! You ate them?!
Their flesh revives my weakened powers.
Their marrow feeds my precious flowers.
Around me do my children bud.
We'll see these walls run red with blood.
Our flight to the surface will come in due time.
I shall be queen, so address me in rhyme.
We've no intention of playing with verse.
We're here to break your wicked curse!
Your time is up, you rotten beast.
You have enjoyed yoru last foul feast.
Enough of the poetry, we've stood here too long!
Let's gut the old hag and we can be gone.
Three thousand years I languished here.
I'll not be beat by you, my dear.
You creatures are in for a nasty surprise!
I'll suck your bones clean and snack on your eyes.
BOSS BATTLE
The Crone
The Crone's attributes:
-Decent Ethereal resist!
-Undead!
-Large!
-Fucktons of HP!
She can give herself regen, too.
Good thing we have anti-large abilities!
Her primary attack is jumping way the hell into the sky, then landing on the weakest member of your party!
This tends to result in even lower HP, making them an even more inviting target, so the best tactic is to switch your party positions as soon as she takes flight.
Which is not to say that it's her only form of attack! this laser makes it VERY dangerous for Pyanpau to be in the front of the party - his chi does nothing to block the damage, and he can't heal himself.
It's tough to get the timing right on dodging her jump - she doesn't pick a target until the apex. Fortunately, Ionae has a dodge chance of 43%, and has been rolling nicely.
Fortunately for us, those charged Slay attacks from Denever are a world of hurt!
That's a more appropriate target for those lasers! Denever can take it like a man.
Almost dooone!
And another villain defeated.
Don't hurry back, monster, you're not a pleasant sight. The next time we meet will be the last, I promise you.
Look at the weed! The crone's disappearance seems to have disturbed it. It's dying, and that completes our first task. We still need to reach Weir 21 and divert the river flow before we can return to Underport.
Next time: I'm tired of this shithole!
