Chapter 7: Laweniloethl

So I found a town!

Also, proof that the wilderness is not without its dangers. I'm going to evade this one, just to be on the safe side.

Sounds trustworthy as hell!

LET'S VISIT

Laweniloethl
Outlaw settlement
Threat Level: 1/5

@
Beggar
Threat Level: 0/10
Special: Get booze for giving gold
Corpse: No effect

This place is classy!

I have a few items of business here. After I get some booze from that beggar.

The black market!

The prices here are atrocious, but I'm checking it out regardless. Why?

Because if you see an item once, it's identified for the rest of the game.

@
Assassin
Threat Level: 3/10
Special: Poisons
Corpse: No effect

r
Skriek, the cloaked ratling
Threat Level: 0/10
Special: Sells keys
Corpse: No effect

Skriek's keys are pricey!

I'm still getting one, because keys are handy.

Not much else here for a Lawful character. This town has the chaotic equivalent of the Village Dungeon quest (kill Jharod), a quest to kill the sheriff, and some skill training open to Chaotics only.

I'm out!

Now, I embark out of civilized lands and into the heart of adventure!

d
Large dog
Threat Level: 1/10
Special: N/A
Corpse: No effect

Attacked on the way by dogs!

Chumps.

ONWARD

I am not NEARLY strong enough to trust my luck against a swamp hydra yet.

Swarm of frogs!

Barbarian hordes are dangerous, with their arrow bombardments! i'd better wipe 'em out fast.

The spellbook is Slow Poison again.

The road here is a trap! It makes travel nice and fast... at the cost of being ambushed by some VERY nasty monster groups.

I'll stick to the woods.

There's a pyramid up north!

It doesn't have an entrance, though. I can't get in.

And time for a pit stop!

The Old Barbarian's Glade
A small clearing
Threat Level: 0/5

@
The Old Barbarian
Threat Level: 0/10
Special: Assigns quest
Corpse: No effect

I don't have enough kills to be assigned this quest, unfortunately. However, I can use this place as a rest stop!

Before we go any further, I want to have a good idea of what I'm working with.

Metal Cap: Normal.
Chain Mail: -1 to melee attacks, -3 to missile attacks, -3 to DV... not so good, but I just can't part with that +5 PV. Heavy as sin, too.
Light Cloak: Normal.
Battle Axe of the Eagle: This thing is in pretty shitty condition, sadly. I'll be keeping an eye out for a new axe.
Small Shield: Normal.
Ring of Damage: Useful, nothing to write home about.
Seven League Boots: My most valuable possession.
Short Bow: Found it on some barbarians.
Holy Symbol: Piety thermometer!

Inventory!

Amulets: Three, all unID'd.
Weapons: The broadsword will sell nicely, or be good if I decide to switch over to using swords. The hatchet is a tool for lumberjacking.
Missile weapons: Just in case my bow breaks again.
Tools: A pair of keys.
Rings: Two, both unID'd.
Wands: Two violent, two unID'd. Ball Lightning is a stupidly dangerous wand - it fires a lightning bolt in a random direction.
Potions: Lots, all useful. Especially the holy water.
Scrolls: Two, both unID'd.
Books: Bridge building, and backup books for my offensive magic. Just in case.
Food: 3 Iron Rations.
Money: 950.

Magic!

So, I've been treating magic so far as if it were an awesome, unlimited resource. It's not.

See that number left ot the pp cost? That's the number of castings for the spell. Rereading books raises this, until the book disappears. Each time you cast a spell, it goes down a bit - the amount depends on various factors. A wizard with 2000 castings of Light might drop the castings by 1 when using it, but a Fighter with 20 castings left might use all of them up in one shot. It's complicated.

The point is, one spellbook gives you a finite number of times you can cast the spell.

I've gone over what the spells do before. Between items, this, and turn Undead, I have a good idea of what I'm capable of!

This is a good place to drop items I won't be needing in the next area.

Okay, let's go!

SHOOT ARROWS AT ORCS

Oh hey. This is useful.

Time to demonstrate another valuable trick!

DIP CURSED SCROLL INTO HOLY WATER POTION

At the cost of the potion, I turned a cursed scroll of identify into a blessed scroll of identify!

READ THAT SHIT

Blessed items are wonderful.

LET'S SEE WHAT I'VE GOT

Gonna go for the necklace of rapid healing, out of those three.

And I have some niceish rings! Time to start a FIREPROOFING KIT

Fireproofing Kit
Ring of Fire Resistance
Ring of Ice
Elemental Gauntlets
Intrinsic Fire Resistance
Blessed Fireproof Blanket

The scrolls are boring, the wands empty.

I'm still holding on to them, though.

This is a dreadful place. A place of death.

I place I someday must go. But not now.

For now, though, I shall go here.

Next time: The ultimate dungeon!
