Cats are very important to ADOM. There is an NPC very late in the game who will, if you have killed no cats during the game, give you the best ring in the game. If you have killed cats, he will attack you instead, being stronger for each cat you've slain. He killed my best legitimate character.
Avoid fighting cats at nearly any cost.
Fortunately for me:
-Cats can't open doors.
-I have seven league boots.

It'll need converting, though.
The downside is that I didn't run into enough monsters to convert the altar!
The upside is that the book is for Lesser Divine Touch, a spell that shoots a beam that stuns enemies. Good for things like, say, cats!
