Aug 22, 2011 17:00

[ Lookie here, check out this gorgeous view of the sea. The way the water is so clear and the sun shining brightly down on it. It seems like the perfect day for a swim and the perfect day to be outside, especially on the beach. Those by the Cianwood and Olivine beach should get out right now and sit right there, just like what the good old ( Read more... )

A puzzle, is it?

[Mental math, go.]

...At the moment, the daughter is ten years of age; her father is forty. In twenty years' time, she'll be thirty and he sixty, thus making him twice as old as she is.

You are correct! The reasons being is just like you have described them yourself, fitting all the specifications that the puzzle has asked for. Wonderful job.

[ About to write the won picarats in his notebook when-- ] May I learn of your name, my boy?

It's an enjoyable way of passing the time. Ah, and my name is Yagyuu Hiroshi. I gather you're keeping score?

I am Professor Hershel Layton. A pleasure to meet you, Yagyuu. [ He tips his hat in greeting. ] And that I am. I write down the names of everyone that solves my puzzles into this notebook along with their picarats. This way, I will know exactly how much they have and what prizes they can afford with them.

One year already? Would be about a year for me too, if I hadn't left for three months.

Do I still have my unused picarats? [ he's asking because... free items... ]

Yes, we have arrived approximately the same time in Johto, correct?

And you do indeed have your unused picarats. I have not crossed out your name in my notebook, Mister Netherlands.

Give or take a few days, yeah.

How many do I have?

If I remember, we have met on Route 29. [ when Layton has gotten lost... orz ]

And in my notebook, it says you have exactly 110 picarats.

[Prizes? Puzzles? You have his interest Professor. His interest but sadly not his intelligence.]

Two anniversaries? Is it being your name day as well Sir? Oh but you are sounding like you are being English.. Are english people having name days? Umm.. were you married before coming here? Your wife is not missing you too much I hope?

Oh! The puzzle.. umm... Is she 15 and he 60? Umm.. I'm afraid I'm not very good at these kind of things so...

[ There's a small pause of hesitation here. ] No, I am not married, but my sweetheart is here in Johto. [ If Claire hasn't died all those years ago, Layton would have propose over that dinner, but... Well, moving on. ] If you are referring to the day I have received my name, then you are correct. It is also my birthday and in England, we celebrate birthdays more than name days.

And while the two ages you have given fit into the first half of the puzzle, it does not for the second. Do not worry and take your time with it. [ picarats down to 12 now! ]

Your.. sweetheart is here in Johto?

[Have a very happy laugh at that Professor!]

You came here and met her? That is so sweet! I guess maybe sometimes coming to this place is not such bad thing after all...]

Day you received your name? No...hmm.. name is... is...

[He frowns as he thinks on this one for a bit, if they don't have them then it is a little strange to some people.]

Well is day you celebrate specially because it is your name. That way other people can be celebrating with you and without having to worry about yours and others ages. Can also be nice to celebrate with everyone of same age yes?

[ There seems to be little response to the fact it is the mans birthday itself. Birthdays are more of a private thing to the young Baltic he'd never tell anyone when his was since those that need to know already know.]

The puzzle is wrong? hmm...ok.. Umm... well if he is four times older... that is... umm... she would be five he would be.. umm..

[He's counting on his fingers now.twenty.. but that's just wrong... that would mean ( ... )

Ah, my sweetheart is actually from my world, but I have met her again her. [ Since she's kinda dead in his world for about ten years now... ] I apologize for being unclear.

Is that so? That's quite the interesting celebration. As you have seen, I'm afraid that I'm not too knowledge about Name Day, and that is correct!

When we plug in those ages, it fits quite nicely into the puzzle. Very well done. Critical thinking is the key to success.

[OH BOY PUZZLES-- well, it's more like algebra, but hey, he likes math]

Do you want me to show my work while I solve this, Professor?

It is not necessary, my boy, but you may if you wish.

[what the Professor gets next is a text filled with numbers]

The fact that the father is four times his daughter's age can be shown with a simple equation, assuming F is the father's age and D is the daughter's.

F=4D

If in twenty years, instead of being four times her age, he'll only be half. Like so.

F+20=2(D+20)

From there, 's as simple as plugging in F=4D into the second equation and solving for D.

4D+20=2(D+20)

4D+20=2D+40

4D=2D+20

2D=20

D=10

And once you do that, all you've gotta do is plug in 10 into the first equation.

F=4(10)

F=40

[and then, a grin]

The dad is 40, while the girl is only 10.

Ha ha! Sorry, I'm a bit of a show off. Math's kinda my subject.

I love games!~ The child's father would be fourty and the girl would be ten.~ [Games and family themed! The best right there.]

Your Pokémon evolved?

You are correct! If the father is forty and the daughter is ten, in twenty years, their ages will fit into the specifications I have asked for. Very well done, sir. May I learn of your name to record your picarats down into my notebook?

And not at all. It will still be a little more time before my other Pokemon evolve.

Thought so.~ Well, I don't actually have a name, but I'm known as the Other Father if that helps?

Do all of them evolve?

Ah, a pleasure to meet you then, Other Father. I am Professor Hershel Layton. [ He tips his hat in greeting. ]

No, not at all. Some do not have any evolutions while others sometime refuses to evolve due to having some attachment to the form they have.
