It sounds like what I imagine the airplane sounds like (inside and outside) if I'm not wearing noise-canceling headphones!

This was fascinating - I remember reading Amanda Palmer's blog when she was finally free of her label, and I can totally understand the need to get out of a bad deal.

To celebrate, I share this "I got out of my label" song of Palmer's, that I adore :)

I've never heard that song before - I love it. A much better song than Metal Machine Music, though that pretty much goes without saying.

Ke$ha is currently undergoing a major dispute with her label that's especially ugly and further proof that record labels are the devil.

Thank you for reading and sharing that song!

Yeah - and Ke$ha's career was never going to be long term, and the label is basically burning through her fifteen minutes :( Especially since the whole dispute revolves around sexual harassment.

The good news for Ke$ha is that, based on what I've read, she mostly wants to write songs and she's had quite a bit of success in this area. Hopefully, if her pop career is over because of this ugly situation, she'll be able to continue writing songs.

I'd heard rumors, but ... Okay, yeah, I only managed 71 seconds.

I get what he was going for, sort of a dissonant industrial tension, but it's like Steve Reich scored the first Terminator movie. This is the sort of thing Nine Inch Nails would sample in the late 80's, but at least there'd be some slinky bass or drums over it. (Come to think of it, 'Reptile' may've been precisely this.)

I don't often say "I'm going to listen to King Crimson to get back to normal," but that's what I'm about to do. ("Frame by Frame," I think.)

Allegedly, he hid sequences from classical music pieces in here. I have listened to the whole damn thing desperately trying to find any sense of melody, rhythm or variation that might suggest anything and I swear to you there are times I think back on listening to it and wanted to slug him in the face. And I've never hit anyone.

King Crimson can solve a surprisingly large number of problems when correctly applied. This is my go to piece:

Yep, the Reed is unlistenable. But....I do like where industrial artists of the late 70's and early 80's took this approach to "music" -

I do love Industrial (especially Einstürzende Neubauten) but I feel like the connection between it and Metal Machine Music is sometimes overstated. Maybe this is my hatred of the album overcoming all logical sense.

Let's enjoy two more excellent Industrial tracks to scrape MMM out of our brains:

The sound of guitar falling down a flight of steps for 75 MINUTES !!! That is just noise with no sense ... I am not sure I can manage that for 75 seconds even.

Your writing so informative as always. I thoroughly enjoy my take away (s) from you every week.

You are a wiser person than I. I actually listened to the whole way through once.

Once.
