I've been doing this thing where I try new things and right now my new thing is trying out different beers. Not a lot of beer, like one six pack every two weeks, which is all I can get through.

So far all I've learned is that I'm really terrible at choosing beer.

I don't think you're terrible at choosing beer. From my experience beer, all beer, pretty much tastes horrible until you've had enough of it that you just don't taste it any more. That could be because you're a six pack for the night and are wasted or because you've been drinking the same swill for a month and you're used to it. So now instead of tasting like piss it just tastes like the beer you drink.

BTW the beer I drink is usually Bud Light. That's as close to an endorsement as I get.

What have you tried so far?

Related, I need to create a mix CD of Tegan and Sara for a dear friend. Something like a sampler, maybe with included explanation for the selection. Could I talk you into being my resident expert? Much tastier than beer.

Sam Adams Cherry Wheat and Flying Dog's Tire Bite Golden Ale. Maybe I'm just really used to microbrewed or something.

I don't know about expert, but I can help if you need it.

I have connections to the bars here that are embarrassingly strong, but this is something that--for once--I can help with. What about beer do you like? Smooth stuff or heavier tastes? Clean beer or stuff with lots of sediment? Bitter, sour, sweet or hoppy? Maybe I can recommend something.

PS: I was just out with a couple of ladies an hour ago and we all agreed that Sam Adams Cherry Wheat is impossible to drink after the first few sips. And Flying Dog is kind of an oddball beer. So you're not so strange; not strange at all.

Last year at a beer festival called Wazoo, a team of us judged Sam Adams Cherry Wheat to be less of a beer than Miller Chill -- and that's not saying a lot. It was one of the first "fruit beers" on the microbrew market, and tastes horribly medicinal to me.

Lindemans Framboise was the top rated fruit beer. It's hard to find people who *dislike* this beer, in my experience. Fruit lambics (as this is) can be tart, but this (and others) tastes in the direction of an alcohol fruit soda, but with *way* more depth and complexity.

Flying Dog makes decent but not outstanding beers in my experience. There are better Sam Adams out there, including the flagship lager, as well as many of their seasonals.

Some stores allow you to create mixed six packs. That's the easiest way to try a wide variety of beers.
