The Descent: A Critique

I persuaded Jessica to go see The Descent yesterday. As a horror movie, it was quite adequate. As a nature documentary, it was problematic.

Do not jump the cut unless you've already seen it or you have no interest in seeing it or you want to go see it and repeat my objections in a stage whisper and piss off everyone in the theater.

Alright then.

James, it's a horror film. You're not supposed to analyze a horror film! Or an action film. Analyze historical dramas!

You know, I was thinking I like the X-Files better than some "from the producers of" film and I think you have captured what I was feeling.

In the X-Files, it's at least a random mutation that is accounted for by something around the being or a fluke regressive gene, it's not an entirely new species(!). That's more Outer Limits territory and at least wtih the Outer Limits, it comes from somwhwere else so, who knows! This is not to say either show is without flaw, but that their flaws tend to be less immediately evident.

Thank you James. I do appreciate the evidence for me renting TV instead of going to an actual movie.

I also saw The Descent yesterday! Or, as I like to call it, "The Decent." I loved the fact that for the first half of the movie it seemed like nothing was going to happen but some women getting lost in a cave. I thought that was some good suspense building. After that...well, like I said, "decent." I haven't read your full review yet because I'm in the middle of my first cup of coffee, but will in about ten minutes.
