on the topic of animations

Note: This tutorial is for advanced users. Proceed with caution

I've had many many people ask me about how to do animations in icons. Most of my knowledge comes from the lovely mannequinskin, but I've taught myself a few things as well. This tutorial expands to AS3 as well, so you won't be able to do this without an animating program of some kind.

Awesome tutorial!! I just love it! I was dying to know how to do the snow effect!!

As for linking you, would a simple link on my user info. page be ok or should I specify on whatever community I post the certain icon on? Or both?

Oh yeah, here's the icon I made from this, luckily I didn't have to do an image crunch this time. ^_^

It looks great :3

Link however you feel is best, it doesn't really matter. It's not something I'm going to strictly enforce anyway x3

Oooh, nice tutorial! The last snowy icon I made, I actually used a 3-frame gif from real snow. XD;; I'll have to try this next time!

Lovely tutorial. I used it to do this in PS8 and Image Ready because there are less steps you need to follow.

I am just starting with animating icons, and I must say this tutorial worked great :) I have really seen the potential of this effect, and was wondering if you know of a good store of Animated Gif Backgrounds? Falling snow, rain, wind, ripple effect and so forth which would be perfect with integrating with images, like you show.

The example I have here is cool, but as you mention in your tutorial, I think I will change the characters background to mountains, snow, ice and pine trees to make it look a little more believable ;)

I also noticed that the blueness of the snow gif...(everything but the snow) affects the image color. I suspect if we change it to black, it will integrate better with the icons?

Anyway, thanks!

I was considering changing the animation to greyscale, but my icon was already blue, so there difference was minimal. However, if you want to change it to grayscale but don't know how, when you're at the step of setting the layer to screen, just add a colour overlay (either black or white, doesn't matter) and then set the colour overlay mode to "color" and that will make it greyscale for you.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any decent animation sites. I google search what I want specifically, but unfortunately, most animations are really cheesey and useless for me, I end up just making most of them on my own. Wind is something most people end up drawing by hand, but rain is something easily done on your own, as is the watery ripple effect (I'll try to write tutorials on them eventually) As for backgrounds though, gettyimages.com will have lots of neat pictures.
