I woke up this morning around 3:30 and couldn't go back to sleep. I just realized it must have been my subconscious notifying me that today is my LJ's 5th birthday! Let's reflect on where I was back then:

On April 5, 2002, I:
- was still single, albeit engaged
- was living in Atlanta with geebs and JS, a veritable bachelor geek Ground Zero ( Read more... )

Wow, congrats, and Happy LJ Birthday!

My life has hardly changed at all in 5 years - it's nice to see yours has. I've never had a burrito there, but I love the soft tacos at Willy's (w/marinated tofu, of course).

Its funny, I'm in a burrito haze these days because I've been reading about San Francisco in guidebooks, and one thing I saw in particular talked about the unique San Franciscan mix of marinated tofu in Mexican cuisine. Which isn't so weird here, but then again Willy's is based on SF style and surely the idea came from there. All the same, it was nice to see it there, like it passed some kind of authenticity test...

My Willy's order for the 7 years I've gone there has always been the veggie burrito (or the super veggie burrito when I used to be a bit more decadent). Sampling the menu is good but for this place that's all I need...

I always get the exact same thing, the Super Soft Taco with Marinated Tofu, topped with everything, including cilantor and chopped olives. I like the tomatillo salsa too. When I find something good, I like to stick with it.

You're going to have a great time in SF - I love that town!

I used to hate burriots, had gone to Willy's ages ago with some friends and did the whole thing where "I have no clue what to order, tell me what to order" and it ended up being a bunch of stuff I didn't like (like lettuce, etc). (not anyone's fault but mine, really, since I should've just read the menu and ordered it myself ( ... )

It does seem that consistency jumps around at these places, but I think I honestly like it that way. At least it keeps it from being totally homogenous, I guess. Or maybe I just say that because I think I've found all the good locations...

As for today's trivia, I learned that burritos were originally prepared for field-workers (a la poboys) and they acquired their name because, like a pack mule, they were loaded up. As "burrito" literally translates as "little donkey" (so there goes one urban legend)...

Yeah, that CD just happened to catch my eyesight yesterday afternoon and was great for a sunny incresingly cooler evening approaching dusk. A-chan was in her high chair at the time and grooved to the opening motorcycle noises so it passed her test!

Re: SF burritos - it seems like no two people ever have the same favorite taqueria. I've always been partial to El Toro at 17th and Valencia.

Time Out lists that one in their guide as one of the reliable choices. They also made Taqueria Cancun sound good too although they say its a little out of the way from a regular tourist path. I think I still have the old issue of the zine "Ben Is Dead" where they assessed all of the legendary SF taquerias and graded each burrito. Granted that dates from the mid-90s but how often do you see a Consumer Reports test on something like this?

Nice burrito reviews. The note about the tricolor chips was strangely prophetic (they have since been discontinued).

And Moe's got sued over the dead rock star thing so those posters are all gone too. Truth be told it seems they have improved on their game quite a bit over the last year in particular. They're my only burrito option in Fayette County so I would begrudgingly go to them when the urge struck - only to find that its actually pretty good now. Maybe I'm getting old and my taste buds are dying. Or perhaps the Moe's CEO read grimstari??
