This is a great article -- I really enjoyed it. After having lived in both Toronto and Montreal, I'd have to say that I agree that Torontonians are not smug. "Smug" is actually a generous word, because the large majority of Montreallers would say something much worse. Most of the country hates Toronto, and I can't for the life of me understand why. My experience of Toronto has in fact been the opposite of what most people's opinons are -- I find Torontonians to be open, friendly people. Sure, people may appear closed and cold while riding the subway, or while walking down Bay st., buy I guarantee that any large city you visit people appear the same way while existing in annoymous, public spaces. When it comes to striking of conversation, I find Torontonians much much more friendly than Montreallers, and now that I'm on the West Coast even more friendly than Vancouver or Victoria. I think the reason for this is that Toronto is a city full of newcomers -- I bet the average person you meet was not born and raised in the city. ( ... )

yeah, i agree with what you said too. there was so much more i could have written about in the editorial, like the reasons why the misperception exists, but i was limited by space.

also, what you said about torontonians not being that bad is true. i find people in ottawa to really be more arrogant, maybe not as quiet but definately acting like they have a chip on their shoulder.

i mean, i've never had a single problem in toronto, as far as crime goes. but everytime i go to ottawa, i either get someone trying to fight me or i see fights happening. i was even punched in the face, uninitiated, on a visit to ottawa from toronto.

crazy world.

thanks for the comments!

well, i kindof exagerated.

i was born in oakville, lived in the toronto-area until i was seven... then lived in ottawa until i was 18.

but i still think that torontonians have an unfair reputation.

people are just jealous i guess...
