That's grim. It's bad enough that it's done to begin with but to do it to capture the hearts and minds of the trendilly health conscious/obsessive takes it to a whole new level of sick.

Damn. My mum loves the Pom juices. I probably just ruined her day by sending her that link.

juice is also problematic because of the slave migrant labour, illegal land grabs, displacements of large numbers of indeginous populations (which contributes to growing urbanization and city-slum sprawl in the third world -- aka the bread and fruit basket of the first world) and also pesticides and the like which not only endanger us indirectly through polution but also result in the deaths of thousdands of migrant and local underpaid and pretty much invisible labourers every year.

Dole, for example, shoots farmers unwilling to leave their lands and takes the farms by force. i had a kid in my OAC World Issues class who came to canada as a refugee because his parents were murdered by Dole Pineapple and the Thai government in front of his eyes because they refused to leave their lands and relocate to slums outside one of Thailand's major cities. i bought some fruit from the No Frills near my parents house today and felt quite sick about it...
