Sexual/relationship health in popular film

I always thought it would be an interesting project to do an audit of popular films that portray sex and intimacy and whether it sets good or poor examples for viewers (especially youth if that is the target audience) in terms of protection against pregnancy and STIs as well as consent and respect ( Read more... )

This is something I never really thought of in movies, part of it could be that my movie watching is fairly limited in the sense that much of what I watch tends not to have much in the way of obvious sex.

Off the top of my head the one movie that stands out is Kids. From what I remember (I have not seen this movie in nearly a decade) it has many, many don'ts as the characters do not use protection and seem to believe in several myths (like not getting pregnant your first time). However, something this movie does that many/most other movies don't do is show the consequences of not using open communication, believing in myths, promiscuous sex, etc.

For all the negatives there is a positive: the female who finds out she is HIV positive takes responsibility and tries to find the guy who gave it to her to tell him and try to stop it from spreading.
