2.18. "I think people that have a brother or sister don't realize how lucky they are. Sure, they fight a lot, but to know that there's always somebody there, somebody that's family."

Tab wasn't nervous, not really. The way her leg kept bouncing up and down must be due to the lack of sugar in her body. It wasn't helping the way that Tara and Evie seemed to ask her if she was okay every five minutes. She didn't ask Evie if the blonde was okay every five minutes, so why was she getting it? If this was a commitment issue thing, than they were totally barking up the wrong tree. In the wrong street. In the wrong suburb.
She wasn't wondering if she was doing the right thing. Not at all. It had nothing to do with the little fights she and Luke had been having since that night in the bar, or the way Luke had kept looking like he wanted to be anywhere else but at the guest house they had all taken over in the name of the twin wedding. Truth was, Tab would much rather be spending this time getting ready with her brother. She didn't do the girly make-up and giggling thing. Tara and Evie seemed to be doing it rather well, and Tab just wanted to put on her headphones and sit and wait for the ceremony to start.
Apparently there was still lots to do though, like making sure she had on the right underwear and that the dress still fitted, and that any touches to her hair and nails could be done. This was definitely the one and only time she was getting married.
Riley was pretty sure he had drawn on every single curse word, swear word, and expletive known to man in his head as he ran through the halls of the guest house, and all were aimed at the bloke who should have been his brother-in-law by the time the sun set that day. There were a few wedding guests mingling around the place in anticipation of the wedding and Riley shot them a distracted smile as he passed, but there was only one thing on his mind. He had to get to Tab. It was going to risk seeing Evie, but this couldn't wait. He bounded up the large sprawling staircase to the floor the girls were on. He hadn't really spoken much to Luke's cousin prior to this day, so he had been surprised when the poor guy on crutches was knocking in the guest room Riley was occupying with Lachlan, Pat and Josh waiting to be signalled to the start of the ceremony. The last thing he freaking expected was Andrew to breathlessly and desperately tell Riley that Luke had done a cold-feet runner as quickly as possible in the opposite direction of the twin wedding.
Riley had been stunned and just gaped when Andrew rapidly tried to apologise and explain that he couldn't chase his cousin like a Best Man should on account of the crutches. Well, Riley fucking couldn't chase him, either! The bastard! If there was anyone Riley had to get to right now, it was Tab, and Tab only. Lachlan was up to his elbows in a dirty diaper after RJ decided to christen is baby wedding kilt, and Pat was trying to help out so the room wasn't covered head to toe in shit. That left Josh, who reflexively bolted from the room in the direction Andrew had explained, obviously more than prepared to try and talk some sense into the other groom. Riley made a note to buy him a drink later. Or ten drinks. He left Andrew with Lachlan and Pat, then just bolted. Tab had to know. She didn't deserve to be left hanging alone if Luke was about to break her heart. Riley trusted Evie and Tara to take care of his sister in normal circumstances, but this? This was a twin thing.
He banged on the door of the room the girls had. "Look, I know I'm not supposed to be here and all that but I really need to talk to Tab. Like, right now. It's important!" he called through the crack in the door.
Evie and Tara exchanged panicked glances as the two best friends tried to cover up Evie in her white corset and and garter. Tab just stared at them both and she waited until they were hiding in a corner away from the door before she opened up and slipped out into the hallway. Evie looked like she was hyperventilating at the idea of being seen by Riley before the wedding. Funny, since Tab could have sworn the two were having naughty closet sex at five in the morning. Unless there was someone else called Riley getting royally shagged and having his name screamed out.
"What's wrong, beanpole?" she asked as she wrapped her robe around her tiny frame, and looked up at her brother. He looked... he definitely didn't look like a groom on the happiest day of his life. "Riley?"
Riley put his hands on her arms and squeezed them softly. He drew a breath and let it out heavily, wetting his lips as he tried to figure out the best way to lay it on her. "I want to tell you not to panic, but I know that's just stupid. But we're trying to sort it out, okay? I just had Andrew at our room. Luke's..." He hesitated with a small frown, really wanting to find Luke's Aussie arse and plant his foot firmly up in it, and not in a kinky way, either. "Luke's run. He panicked and run. Andrew couldn't go after him, so Josh has gone. I'm sure he just needs some time to get his head together or... something. I don't know. I'm not exactly feeling the same way as him right now but I just needed to tell you myself."
"Luke..." Tab's face twisted with pain as she reached out to grab his shirt to keep her on her feet. It felt like someone was injecting ice into the veins as a coldness flooded her system and she just stood there looking up at her brother helplessly. "No, no. Not him! Not fucking Luke! He can't... he just can't..."
Riley wrapped his arms around her in a hug, holding her tightly. "I'm going to find him, alright. I'm going to talk to him and I'm going to... to..." He faltered, not exactly really wanting to specifically say what he wanted to do to Tab's fiancé right now. None of it was very nice. If you've got cold feet, you don't wait until your wedding day to do a runner, even if it made for a good movie plot line. This wasn't a movie and real people could get hurt. Like Tab. And that wasn't fucking on!
Tab buried her face into her brother's chest and held onto him tightly. This couldn't be happening. It just couldn't! Luke was the one man she wanted to marry... Maybe everyone had been right. She was pushing him too quick because she wanted to get married with Riley and Evie and now look what had happened. "Even if he doesn't get married, can't we still just be together? Can't he just come and talk to me? Riley, I can't do this without him! It's not going to be fun marrying my fucking self. I never meant to drive him away."
"You didn't drive him away," Riley said firmly, stepping back so he could see her face. "He's scared, Tab. Maybe getting married on the beach in board shorts is more his thing, maybe he needed more time, but he didn't tell you that, did he? He agreed to this and he let it get this far. He doesn't get to fucking hurt you like this! I'm going to kill him."
Tab shook her head as she pulled her mouth to the side and looked down at the floor. She couldn't believe that Luke was this scared and never said anything. "I asked him! I asked him at the bloody bar and he never said anything. He told me off for trying to accuse him of being depressed, or whatever. I asked him, Riley... he never said anything. Just said it was normal to be nervous, or something. I'm nervous! And I'm the commitment-phobe, and I'm still fucking here!"
"The commitment-phobe? Last time I looked, neither of you were really adept in the whole settling down thing. And even the sanest, calmest person can freak out on their wedding day. Maybe even he doesn't know what's wrong, but I'll damn well torture it out of him if I have to. This whole wedding thing is intimidating. Yeah, I get it. I do. But I still want to smack him in the face." Riley wanted to pace. He had a habit of that when things were bothering him. This was fucked up. He pushed his fingers through his hair with a frustrated growl.
"Go find him. Please, beanpole." Tab brought her hand to her face as she tried not to cry. She didn't want her make-up reapplied if she managed to ruin it. It was torture enough the first time. She leaned into her brother again, and took a deep breath. "I can't do this without him... even if he doesn't want to marry me. I just want to know he's okay. Before you kill him."
Riley pressed his lips together. Truth was, he was fucking nervous himself, but he was trying to be a man about it. "Can you still marry him if I bring him back in pieces? I'll try and make sure his shirt isn't creased."
"Only if he still wants to marry me," Tab replied as she pulled away from her brother.
