I am the only person in the entire city of Helsinki who wears sneakers whilst commuting. For real! These ladies are walking down the sidewalk in their pointy heels! I wonder if it's because for most of the year they have to wear boots, maybe they feel liberated by their pointy heels. But I've *seen* people looking at my sneakers as I walk to ( Read more... )

European's don't wear sneakers. It's how they tell who the peope from the US and Canada are. Seriously, they're looking at you and thinking, "She's American."

Given your job, I should hope so. :-) It's worth looking at from a safety angle though, even in Helsinki. Do you necessarily want to single yourself out as a potential target?

I really don't. In fact, even though everyone swears up and down that Helsinki is one of the safest cities on the planet, I still vary my commuting times and routes. Just in case the evil kidnappers thought I might be an easy target...

I shall ponder the footwear issue.

That is SO true in Europe. Basically if you wear sneakers, you are clearly an American. Buy some Danskos and fit in!

Are Danskos comfortable? I walk all the way to work, now, ya know...

They're essentially walking shoes. I used to walk the two miles home in them every day, plus I still wear them every day because if I don't, my feet hurt! Get some, spend the money, they last forever and they'll be your favorite shoes, plus you can wear them with or without socks.

Thank you for the suggestion! I'll take a gander at their website, and see if my budget allows for new shoes. =)

Why I lived in sandals when I was in Turkey. People would comment..."Where is she running to?"
:)

Aren't these little differences funny?

(Mephisto shoes...which are cheaper in Europe than the US...also nice.)

Dude, that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me. I miss you too! Did you know that I'm going to be in town in August? I'm gonna try to get Jamez to have a BBQ so we can all get together like old times. =)

I did not know that. Now I'm excited! We should have drinks or something, also.

Yes, we should! I'll be staying with my seester in Lombard, but she'll have to work some of the days I'm there, so maybe we could even hit the Nugget and have pancakes, if your class schedule allows.
