I agree with you totally. I still write stuff like that but I post so rarely (real life sucks up all my time), that it barely counts. Definitely gets lost in the sea of smut.
Guess we'll just have to point it out to each other then. Like for example, Lex aka Retrolex is posting again. She's been editting her old fics and putting them back up.
*does happy dance* LEX!!! Damn I missed her work! "Third Party, Fire and Theft" was my favorite piece by her and I'm beyond thrilled she's going to be re-posting that. Eeeee!!!
I write gen fic quite often, I just don't post a lot of it on LJ because its not well received very often. I think the appeal of slash fic or porn is that its a method of quick gratification. As human beings we are inately drawn to the taboo or the erotic and quite often they're feel good fics, especially when it's pure fluff fic rather than leading to sex
( ... )
Not denying the gratification of good smut or fluff fic... I'm just asking, where's all the other types of fics? I don't want to read ONLY that one kind of fic y'know? (Nor do I want to only write one genre/type of fic, but that's not my issue.)
It's sad that people are just writing for the reviews or attention lately. Sure it's nice when people like your writing, but again, it's not the only thing I like to be known for: writing porn... I'd like to be known for being able to produce a fic in ANY genre and have it liked. But again, that's me.
And at the end of the day, I'd just like to have some variety. It's like watching TV. I'd like to be able to watch Modern Family at one point, Glee another time, maybe Grimm or Downton Abbey when the mood strikes. Not porn 24 hrs a day, y'know? That's what I'm trying to say
Oh I know, I totally agree too. My reply was more just the reasoning of why there seems to be more porn than anything else. :)
There's less variety everywhere now though, I've noticed. Films are predictable, tv is in the majority no longer original and sadly fic is going the same way. It's why something like 50 shades of grey (shades of shite more like) is now more popular than say the latest Stephen king novel. It is a sad state of affairs I have to agree, very sad, it's why I read very little in the way of fanfic now too, other than friends I've always followed such as yourself, antel, niyazi_a or vejiraziel.
YES SHADES WRITE PLZ. =) I love and miss Communique too.
I pretty much don't write sex scenes at all, by the way. That's not because I'm a prude - I don't mind reading a bit of well-written sexytimes now and then. It's for two reasons: 1) Some of my friends share the story with their young kids, and I don't want them to have to skip any of it and/or have The Talk on anyone's terms but their own. 2) I suck at it. =D
the irony in your rant, to me at least, is that writing porn IS broadening my horizons. i ventured into it at about the same time that the rest of the fandom started producing little else, much to my sadness.
part of MY problem right now with producing anything at all, though, is just being all strung out all over real life. there's too much "out there" going on and not enough time left over for fandom or fun things. i have so many beautiful plans, and no energy at all to give to them. :(
Let me get my marvel big bang out of the way and there may well be movie verse cassette fic on the horizon. No smex but lots of Dairu being Dairu and everyone else dealing with the fallout!

If there are still people writing non-smut, the fics are just getting lost in the sea of porn, that I miss spotting them. I've noticed that, yes.

It's just now, very few people write anything BUT that. And there's still so many stories to tell.
