what makes one person stand out? this whole ronald reagan deal has got me thinking about the true immortality of humankind. my dream has always been to do something in my life that will make my name immortal. preferably good

what makes a person stand out? what makes it so that a person is not murdered but "assassinated"? ten people die in a war and it's a tragedy, a thousand die and it's just another statistic.
the whole process of practically making reagan into some demi-god is scaring me. for instance, james had a customer come in talking about how sad it was, and james said "yeah, it's sad." then the customer said "he was such a wonderful president." and james said "well, i don't think he was a very good president, but it's still sad when somone dies." and then the customer started freaking out, saying james was a terrible person. what the hell? i don't think he was such a fabulous president either..so what? grrr..
totally freaky...people are crazy nowadays...and how much do you want to bet that most of their thought process come from watching WAAAAY too much media.
i was talking with my mom about this whole reagan thing because i find it quite disturbing as well. apparently they make a big deal whenever a president dies unless he was blatantly a bad president, nixon for example who i believe was impeached. and when you stop to think about it there have only been a few presidents since lbj (the last president who died that they made a big deal about). there was carter, bush sr., reagan, clinton, and bush jr. the whole thing makes me crazy, but i won't fill up your life with too many comments right now. :)

its interesting to contrast the public's reaction to reagan's death with that of nixon's...
when nixon died, there was a sort of awkward sympathetic silence.this time around though, its as if jfk was shot all over again.
i think the reaction is a simple combination of the media's 'do anything for ratings' mentality, the relative popularity of reagan among both republicans and democrats, and human's tendancy towards blind idol worship.
regardless, it will all blow over in a few weeks, and come november, we'll be electing another republican into the white house... mr. kerry.
it does seem that the flags flying half up does seem to be a little long to have them that way but for the people that dont have tvs lol it might take that to find out that he passed. yes raise your flag but thank you for letting me remember the time in my life when he was round. night ronnie sleep tight
