OA anyone?

I was wondering if anyone has ever been to OA (Overeaters Anonymous)? And if so, what was your experience, was it helpful?  I'm trying to figure out if I should be involved with OA. My therapist doesn't think it's a the group for me right now because they are so focused on losing weight and i'm just getting out of treatment for bulimia. I go to ( Read more... )

Hi.

I've been in OA in the past. Unfortunately, there are no meetings in my area. I was particularly involved several years ago right after I got out of the hospital for eating disorders, before I moved to Nevada.

I found it to be helpful. In my experience, they are not necessarily focused on losing weight so much as they are focused on learning to control the compulsion to overeat by use of the 12 step program.

I guess, I would encourage you to try a few meetings and see what you think for yourself. Hope that is helpful.

Thanks so much. I have been to a few meetings, but haven't really found a small comfortable one yet. I guess I will keep trying. I don't know if OA has phone meetings, but if they do that might be something you can get involved in since there aren't any meetings in your area. just a thought :)
thanks again.

I'm not a restricter but I know folks in OA who are. Some do ABA and OA. I'm in a large metro area so perhaps we have a wider diversity of eating disorders in meetings.

There are on-line and telephone OA meetings. Find links to listings here:

Good luck!

Let me add, if you would like to speak with restricters in OA, I can ask a friend to drop you an e-mail.

My girlfriend had to go to overeaters anonymous. She said that she was amazed at the size of these people. She looked anorexic compared to the overeaters. They even asked her if she was anorexic. Thats a laugh for me. I can't see a person being so huge. But I guess its possible.

Linzi she is an overeater for one. She isn't exactly underweight either. But she doesn't weigh a hell of a lot. And her parents control her every move. I guess that is why we moved on.

Oh okay. She didn't look too anorexic from her pictures though.

I have a friend that went to that with her mother when younger. I thought about asking my therapist about the one around here but I also heard that it can be triggering to someone who is bulimic, although she said there were some there who were bulimic and some who were obese and bulimic. She picked up on purging at OA because she would hear them talking about it to her mom who was going for support, had no babysitter for her so she had to go too. She developed ED tendancies, her mother was a compulsive overeater. Hope things go well if you choose to go. Hope things are going good for you.
