Beauty is Only Skin Deep

There's a blogger who's been getting a fair amount of love on FB lately. First he wrote an essay about being bullied in school. Then there was "You just broke your child. Congratulations." Both were hard to read.

And now there's "Worthless Women and the men who make them."Okay. His heart is definitely in the right place. And he means well. But I ( Read more... )

I have a similar story... I stopped reading fashion mags when I realized that I couldn't afford ANY of the wonderful clothes featured. I mean, a $500 blazer that would go out of style in a year? Not for me.

And I had the same reaction as you did... I stopped paying attention to the mags, and I stopped being frustrated about it.

Same here--throughout college and my marriage I had a subscription to Glamour, and I don't remember much about the issues except that the September one was usually the weight of a Montgomery Wards catalog. And when the December issue would roll around telling Us Women how to be fabulous and sparkly when we attend our swanky New Years Eve soirees...it just made me feel bad for being "ordinary."

Which is just silly.

ps: I think, if you haven't already, you should post this as a comment on that guy's page, for it is awesome!

I had some serious issues about some of the stuff he said in that article (women's self-image is dependent on men's opinions, women should cover up more to help men not think about us sexually, etc).

But I really liked where you said "maybe that's the wrong focus. Maybe the focus should be on the importance of being a whole person, someone worth knowing and loving." Now there is a focus we've completely lost as a society. I like that idea!

i used to like the show. i liked her... i assume you mean Finola Hughes. she was genuine and nice and seemed like she wanted to help the guests who ended up on the show. she would chat with them one on one and hand them tissues if they got emotional. she would talk to them about their problems and ask them things like "why do you think your friends say you need to change? is there something you want to change? is there anything you would change if you could?" Finola always looked put together and classy ( ... )

Well, it's possible that the new chick is trying to be funny like Stacy London on What Not to Wear. I love her (Stacy) because I think she's hilarious, and you know I have a weakness for the snark. I think Jeannie (How Do I Look) is actually less mean than Stacy, but not as sweet as Fiona. And honestly, when Jeannie laughs at some of those clothes... well, most of the time they're pretty awful ( ... )

i have thought all of his articles are a little heavy-handed actually.

as for magazine articles, i have two years of Teen Magazine still. from back in "The Day." :) i keep them for nostalgia.

but i realized early on the high fashion mags and even those fashion mags never applied to me. i could never answer any of the quizzes adequately. not that my answers were "right" or "wrong," but none of the answers really applied to me at all and "none of the above" was never an option. so i figured the magazines weren't relevant to me either.

Someone whose writing I respect recently used a phrase to describe good writing - "shake the pages and see what words fall out" - the less that do, the better the writing. I think SD's posts just need a good shake.
