The Sid James Experience

I just finished reading High Fidelity, and it was utterly fantastic, one of my favorite books ever.  I have two questions though:

1.) How could this story make sense as a musical?  Who thought that it was a good idea?

and

2.)  How could John Cusack play Rob?

Rob is not a John Cusack character, he's an asshole and he's pretentious and... the more he ( Read more... )

this is interesting for multiple reasons:
1- it didn't make sense as a musical. it closed after 14 performances which is basically ungodly. i saw it opening weekend and it wasn't even close to sold out so that was a bad sign.

2- i loved cusack's interpretation of rob. BECAUSE OF THAT i hated Will Chase's performance on B'way. i thought he played it TOO cocky and untouched by the break up and too asshole-ish. cusack's version showed how a man whose life is going nowhere reacts to a huge breakup while Chase seemed unphased by it. THUS, what does the audience care about whether or not he gets the girl back if he, himself, is so apathetic? making a musical about a breakup is a boring enough idea already. the audience clearly just wasn't havin' Chase's version of Rob and I think that is a HUGE part of why it closed.

Yeah, it played in Boston before/after it played in New York and they were giving away tickets to the Emerson kids, it was pathetic. Putnam County Spelling Bee did waaaay better in Boston.
