Have you ever read the Vorkisogan series by Lois McMaster Bujold?

One of the planets has a very patriarchal society where 'honor' is a buzzword like 'face' is in Japan. There's a (paraphrased) line from one of the women, "Honor comes from risk. Deny the risk and you deny the chance of honor."
