Some people just know they won't make a good mother or father. That's something to be respected rather than trying to force them into parenthood in which the child will more than likely suffer or not be properly loved. *sigh* People....
Hmm, I don't know if it's always because they "won't make a good parent" though. But I'm sure there are people who also know that about themselves. I HOPE I'll be a good parent some day!!!
True. That's why I only said some. :) Everyone has their reasons, including ones that may not entirely be in their control. Heck, I know two people specifically who had some level of desire to be parents but it wasn't in the cards. One got the urge too late & medicine she was taking for an autoimmune disorder made it nearly impossible. The other, tried but as a couple decided not to sink money into fertility.
I do know at least one person who has stated they don't want children because they're pretty sure they wouldn't be a good parent.
Actually, I know several people who don't want to be parents and each one has their own unique reason. It's part of the joy of humanity... we're all different, approach life differently, enjoy life differently, etc.
PS. I'm sure you'd make a wonderful parent. You're already a good furmom! ;)
I don't understand how it could possibly be selfish. The world is overpopulated as is. How is it selfish in any way to not add more to it? To realize you wouldn't be a good parent? To not bring a child into the world when you know it's not your calling to take care of it?
Technically, from a sustainability point of view, it's selfish to want to have kids and not the other way around. Something about carbon footprints and overpopulation. I still don't understand the whole "but you /must/ have kids!" mindset, though- if you want kids, great! If you don't, great!
I have a friend who had children later in her marriage, and she said it was because she "knew she wasn't ready until other people's children stopped pissing her off." She didn't want children for a long while, and then one day, just did. So that might happen. There are also many couples who just don't want children. That's fine too. And I agree, don't just have them because that's what you "think you should do."
